Gunlaw or gun laws
America must decide
one or the other
.
by Scooj
- Gunlaw (or gun law) is not a widely standardized term, but it can be interpreted in different contexts.
- In the Old West or “Wild West” sense, the phrase can suggest a situation where: Law and order are dictated not by courts or formal justice, but by who has the most firepower.
- Violence or threat of violence determines authority — i.e., might makes right.

The USA is too far gone to be saved by new gun laws
The sheer amount of weaponry held legally by citizens is mind boggling
Then when you then think of all the illegal weaponry held it becomes an insurmountable target to ever reign in and so the killings continue . . .

Uh, far too gone? Do you live here? Do you understand what we’re like. I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and never seen a gun. Our government is more violent than the people. Everything depends on neighborhoods and poor government. I’m sorry but do you know why people kill each other? Do you know what America is and what it’s like? We have every nationality and religion and race in this country. In spite of what the media tells everyone, we are not too far gone and our government sucks, as do the hateful republicans who love guns and death and war and are greedy and monsters who want to own the bodies of women and our orange stain is completely insane voted into office by republicans who are terrified that freedom threatens their power, but the PEOPLE are NOT the government. The media lies. I’m not saying we don’t have problems but if you’re not from here, you really don’t know what’s going on anymore than I know what’s going on in your country. I’m sorry scooj if this was inappropriate. Please erase it if you want to and I met a family from Australia when I was in Paris. They said they were terrified to come to America because they thought they would be killed. The reality, they said, that it was pretty boring. Miles of flat land and everyone in the cities were so nice and helpful and they never felt in danger. So don’t buy into the media garbage. They are liars trying to sell things and get viewers, they are also trying to inspire FEAR in people. They lie.

Not inappropriate at all, and always good to have some local
perspective. I have been to the USA many times and only ever seen guns in the possession of police and border enforcement. Having said that, from the perspective of living in the uk, it seems that a right to bear arms is anachronistic. Guns are evil and designed to kill. My haiku was commenting on the perceived madness that anyone from anywhere can get a gun and kill a person. When it happens there is tragedy, upset and outrage, but it is the loose gun laws that enable this. I understand that most Americans like most people the world over are decent, good people. We live in an era of extremes though and the savagery of divisive social media. Where it all ends heaven only knows.

I agree. My comment was for the the comment made by the person who said we were too far gone. We are a violent country, it’s actually encouraged, in order to control people. But America is not only about violence or guns. That’s insane. And the country is completely divided on most things…and the north and the south are often like two different countries. It’s complex and complicated but we aren’t too far gone. I think what’s happening will clean out the morons and eventually lead to a better form of government and a more peaceful country. I could be wrong, of course. That’s my hope. I have great respect for your blog and this was not about what you wrote, believe me. So many people visit the us then complain about things or say terrible things about one thing or another when they have no idea what they are talking about. We are not a different country, we are not their country. We are the US and we do things the way we do them, not the way people in another country do things. How can that be hard to understand. Why is liking ice in our water a big deal? People go on and on about it. Well, why don’t they like ice in their water, what’s wrong with them? Why aren’t they like us, since they seem to think we should be like them? it’s exhausting and I normally don’t fight back to say we’re too far gone and all the rest, just makes me feel like someone needs to tell the person that unless they live here (and it depends on where they live) he really shouldn’t talk about things he might not understand.

Thank you for explaining how you feel and how things are… I am encouraged by your optimism and grounded thoughts. I cannot speak for the USA, but often comment about it, perhaps because of the power and influence it has over the rest of the western world. Elon Musk and tariffs are such examples.
We have enough of our own problems in the UK right now to keep me occupied. Our flags have been appropriated by the far right, social media algorithms spread the most damaging lies and everything is a bit of a mess. There are bad players out there stirring things up with their promises of a bright future. We were told that leaving the European Union would lead to the ‘sunlit uplands’… the reality is that it has left out economy in tatters at the worst possible moment, so dealing with covid and the impacts of Ukraine and energy prices had been all the more challenging. I keep trying to reassure myself with the phrase ‘it will pass’, but I believe it might get quite a bit worse before it gets better.

I don’t live in the USA I live in the UK.
I wasn’t talking about the people of the USA I was talking about the Government, the NRA and the weapons manufacturers who unfortunately appear to have the ultimate control of the laws and lawmaking in the USA.
There are too many guns to ever begin to get them out of the hands of those that own them whether legally or illegally, and whilst they remain in the hands of the public it only takes someone having a bad day for terrible things to happen.
The fact that many states still allow high powered assault rifles to be owned by members of the public is quite incredible and the rest of the world looks on with sadness as we see the effect these weapons have when used against innocent members of the communities across the states!

The thing a lot of people don’t understand is that our states may be “united” but people aren’t. They are like two different worlds. We have huge problems, 99% of them made by the government. We are currently lawless, when it comes to what the orange stain wants to do. It amazes me that there are so many of us and one idiot gets to do whatever he wants to destroy the country. How does that make sense? I have no idea what’s going to happen. Civil war, which would be insane since it would be neighbor against neighbor, probably everywhere. It’s as if a blanket of evil hangs over DC and they keep trying to spread it everywhere. The people in most countries don’t want war, they just want to live live peace but the MEN at the top who are greedy and power hungry just WON’T STOP. I’ve said this before, the men who destroy and start wars should be put into an arena and expected to fight either to the death, or until they come to an agreement that satisfies the people. No civilians should be involved, there should be no need for any military, since the only idiots fighting should be the dictators or men who desire death. I would vote for that. It’s absolute madness that the world is the way it is because of a few horrible, men. But we are not over in this country and don’t forget that the cowboy mentality still exists here and gangs are formed because of horrific living conditions IMPOSED BY POVERTY which is due to lack of funds withheld by the government. AND, social media is giving a face to mentally ill teens/adults to kill to get attention and a minute of fame. I don’t think shooters should have their picture in the news or their names, or anything about them. Social media is destructive and deadly in many ways. Anyway, America is not what the media tells anyone it is. There is no free press any longer. I understand that you are having problems as well. You can understand the division between people. Ours may be more violent at times, but it seems to be happening everywhere.

You too. Who knows how long it will take for this to all work out. All we can do is fight back and wait and see. Thank you for everything.

I think the majority of those in power around the world are by default exactly the kind of people who should never be given that power.
The real powers that be, be it arms manufacturers, the huge international corporations that stretch across the globe or the ruling families that have untold disposable wealth and power do well to keep us fighting amongst ourselves whilst they do what they do and take more money and more power.
I am glad that nothing lasts forever and that these elitists will perish just as easily and surely as the very poorest in our societies.
Until then I look forward to the day that we can say ‘Vive La Revolution’ !!!
