You really can’t get more Bristol than Jimmer Willmott, and you can’t get much more Bristol than this magnificent alphabetti spaghetti piece either. This curious and wild concept is weirdly compelling, and also quite awe-inspiring how accurately he manages to present such a familiar food in an unfamiliar way.

I guess that this is pretty close to photorealism, but based on something that doesn’t actually exist. The phrase ‘Alright me babber’ is a Bristol greeting meaning ‘hi, how are you’ sort of thing. This is a brilliant Upfest attracted a lot of attention. Witty and technically brilliant. Bravo me babber.

In recent years, Jimmer Wilmott has turned his focus away from his zany surreal pieces and towards his equally zany alphabetti spaghetti work, which are really cleverly painted, but (speaking as someone who is phobic of tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce) slightly yucky.

I imagine that this piece is a private commission, because it is in somebody’s backyard, and I had to stand on tiptoes with my phone fully stretched above my head to take the photographs. I’m not sure that I’d want this in my garden, but each to his own. The letters picked out in this piece spell FAMILY, and in a way, that is rather touching. Jimmer rarely produces subtle pieces, and this is a country mile away from subtle.

Somehow this piece by Jimmer Wilmott passed me by at this year’s Upfest, and I only got to see it recently during a visit to a few spots with Paul H, including the Tobacco Factory. Sunday is the best day to visit this spot, because there are no cars in the parking spaces, which are immediately in front of the wall. Saturdays would also be good, if it weren’t for the market, which clogs things up a bit.

Jimmer Wilmott has been working in the studio on canvass with his ‘alphabetti spaghetti’ pieces for quite a long while now, but this is the first wall I am aware of that he has decorated in this way. The concept is simple and brilliant and somehow he achieves a photorealistic presentation, which causes many a double-take. Spelling ‘Jimmer was ere’, this is a creative delight from one of the most creative talents in Bristol.
