Mr Klue can confuse me from time to time; his abstract pieces all have such a strong ‘brand’ feel to them, and he loves to paint the same spots in St Werburghs tunnel, that I can sometimes forget whether I have photographed or written about particular pieces. I could have sworn that I had photographed this piece some time ago, but it appears not.

I spoke to somebody in the tunnel a little while back, and they were most complimentary about Mr Klue’s work, and especially about the tone and lightness of touch of his paint. I agreed, and then pointed out that you could make out the letters KLUE if you looked carefully. He thanked me and went on his way. There is indeed a lightness of touch in this piece and a couple of decent scrolls to boot. Always good work from Mr Klue.

I would say that Mr Klue is the (undisputed) king of St Werburghs tunnel, on a measure of number of pieces painted there. It seems to be the place he enjoys painting most, and it is rare to not be able to find something of his at any one time.

This is a colourful one, as ever spelling out KLUE, which is notable perhaps for the way the wispy tops of the letters bleed into a cloudy mass, which might have been there from a previous piece. The central colours are green and orange, which often work well together, but there are also injections of purple and white. The use of these colours combines to create depth to the piece which is on the cusp of being anamorphic. We can be certain that there will be more to come.

This trio of pieces in the tunnel, show how busy Mr Klue has been of late in his favourite spot. The one on the left was painted a day or two before the other two, which I think might have been created in a single session.

The left-hand piece, as with all of them, spells KLUE and has a green base palette. Ephemeral, smoky, abstract letters are part of the USP I would expect to see from Mr Klue and he rarely disappoints. There is little more to add from these three pieces, other than their colour differences.

Pinks and purples dominate in this middle piece, with some yellow highlights along some edges.

Finally, the trio is rounded off on the right with a piece that is predominantly white, again with some yellow highlights. All three together show how Mr Klue’s abstract writing is based around the same simple concept, but can look completely different depending on the design details and colour palette. A busy man.

I tend not to post too many pieces by unknown artists, but sometimes you just have to go for it… I can’t know everything (indeed, I don’t know very much). This haunting piece at the farm end entrance to the tunnel features a girl with a ball and a crow flying towards her. There is something rather tender and innocent about the piece, and it would not be out of place as an illustration in a children’s book.

While the artwork might lack sophistication, it is captivating, and probably deliberately vague. It feels ghostly and ephemeral, almost as if it would disappear if you glanced away. I haven’t seen any other artwork like this around Bristol, although I could be mistaken, but I certainly hope that more such pieces appear – perhaps with a signature.

Mr Klue has been smashing it, not only recently, but for years with his original abstract ephemeral graffiti writing. He definitely favours painting in St Werburghs tunnel, where virtually all of his pieces have been in recent years. He used to paint in the Bear Pit in the good old days, and a few other spots in north Bristol, but his range appears to have narrowed.

The letters, as usual, spell out KLUE, and have a slightly more solid look to them than some of his pieces. His favoured blues and purples are carefully positioned to create light and shade and add perspective to the piece, which the yellow lower edges and white upper edges amplify. A lovely example of this enigmatic artist’s work.

Every year, almost like clockwork, Mr Klue springs into action and follows up with frenetic activity for a month or two before slowing down again for the autumn/winter. This piece marks an up tick in activity which has produced several gorgeous ephemeral works in his favoured spot, St Werburghs tunnel.

The abstract smokey writing style adopted by Mr Klue makes for difficult reading, but this piece is easier than some to read, and you should be able to make out the letters KLUE, if you look hard enough. I’m not sure that Mr Klue gets the credit he deserves for his unique style of graffiti writing, probably in part due top his modesty, so this is a big shout out from me for his consistently brilliant work.

Ooh, I like this rhapsody in pink and yellow from Mr Klue very much. There is a wonderful balance in the piece, which can’t necessarily be said of all his work, but here he has absolutely nailed it. Mr Klue’s abstract style is best described as being ephemeral, like a wisp of smoke that might disappear at any moment.

After the winter slumber, Mr Klue is once again dominating in the tunnel, which is no mean feat, as there are still many very strong pieces there from Ryder’s paint jam at the end of March. I would normally expect the letters here to spell out KLUE, but if I am really honest I cannot pick them out, and wonder if it might read something else. Whatever the letters, this is yet another wonderful piece from the quiet and modest Mr Klue.

Annika Pixie has a style all of her own, not only in her artwork but in her free-spirited way of living her life. Her Instagram posts are an interesting insight into her extraordinary world. Her artwork always feels so fragile and ephemeral, but behind the these ghostly faces lie many untold secrets.

This column piece was painted during a paint jam organised by Skor85. Unfortunately I didn’t get to speak with Annika because she was just leaving as I was arriving, and by the time I had taken a few pictures she had gone. The piece itself is in my view a little haunting and feels a bit tinged with sadness.

Columns are quite difficult to paint and even more difficult to photograph, and I don’t think these pictures do the piece justice. Great to see something new from Annika Pixie, it has been a while.
