Little Italy, New York (1)
The afternoon we arrived in New York, my children were very hungry, and we had to hunt down somewhere to eat pretty quickly, because you know what hungry teenagers can be like. The first restaurant we stumbled across was this nice ‘shabby chic’ place called Osteria in Mott Street (311), Little Italy.
Distracted by the children’s needs, I hadn’t properly looked at the piece on the side of the building. Once they had ordered their food, I nipped out to take a look and snap these shots. Of course I recognised the work immediately as being that of Bristol artist Nick Walker. Strange that I should cross the pond, and the first artwork I should see would be someone I have written about extensively. The international nature of street art.
This piece incorporates the pin-striped gentleman creating a heart made up of a mist, but take a closer look and the mist is actually numbers in a font Nick Walker has used before in other works. This was a great start to what turned out to be a wonderful trip.
1063. Upfest 2017 (75)
These are two really beautiful pieces that I wish I’d spent more time looking at during my walk around North Street Green at Upfest. Each of them is calming and serene, and they make a fine pair. I am not sure if the co-location was by accident or by design, but it works very well.
The left hand side is by Paintily, a Bristol-based artist originally from Brighton. There is something about this stencil that I like a lot, and the stripes on the face of the girl finish the piece off beautifully. I have not seen any of her work before, but would love to see her take her work to the streets.
The right hand side is by Taina, and has the feel of a children’s book illustration. Such a simple idea and so beautifully painted, there is a whole story unfolding here, and one I want to know more about. Taina is a Swiss-Finnish artist based in Zurich whose work I think I could very well fall in love with. A quick look at this website might give you an insight as to why I like her work so much. I definitely want her to return next year.

1023. M32 Spot (9)
On one of the duller walls in Stapleton Road at the M32 skate spot, a whole bunch of new pieces have appeared, of which this is one, which have really brightened up the place. This ‘love bomb’ is by SPZero76 and features the dog, so often included in his works.
SPZero76’s works are always clean and tidy, often with quite a lot going on and plenty of detail to look at. He often includes his ‘stamps’ too, such as the little spray splat with ‘I love Bristol’ or the little SP with a heart. There is never any doubt about who his works are by.
In my limited conversations with SPZero76, I think the one overwhelming thing I take away is his extreme enthusiasm and love for what he does – it comes across in all of his work. I was pleased to find this, because I hadn’t really twigged it was there and it is always nice to make discoveries.
