Thursday doors – 5 December 2024 – Exeter doors

Can it really be 5 December already? This year has whooshed by at an alarming rate, and Christmas is just around the corner. I find this time of year quite tricky. The lack of daylight I am sure sets the tone, but my work also has a peak in December, as the teams I work with want to get everything lined up before the Christmas break, and while the Christmas period might then be ‘sorted’ and quiet for them, it is far from that for me and my team. I am also preparing for a crazy busy spring, although on the upside, I am likely to be ‘on tour’ again and should have the opportunity to visit some new towns and cities and snap up a few more doors.

This is the penultimate selection from Exeter, which I have really enjoyed sharing with you. It is amazing just how much ground I covered and how many doors I photographed in a two-hour walk. Today’s doors are a bit of an eclectic mix, but pretty much presented in chronological order. Enjoy.

This last pair of doors definitely makes it into my top ten for the year, possibly even my top three, so I expect you’ll be seeing them again in my annual round up.

Rather later than anticipated – I had to drop my son off at Heathrow Airport this morning – I bring you the last instalment of doors from Assisi which my family I and visited almost exactly a year ago today. I am pressed for time, and will let the doors do the talking.

It is an exceptionally busy work day today, but I wanted to keep the momentum going with Thursday doors, so here is a quick one from Lincoln with a favourite theme of mine, ghost doors, and a couple of crazy ancient walls thrown in. My son is an apprentice stone mason, so this post is for him really. I hope you enjoy it.

3386. M32 Spot (96)

It is good to see another Zace piece featuring a stone face similar to the one I posted a short while ago from St Werburghs tunnel. In this little corner of the skate spot, Zace has used the unusual shape of the board to good effect. This is the kind of small piece that will often be overlooked, and it is always fun to find little gems like this one.

Zace has a fairly straightforward style and manages to execute it very tidily. I like the reversed out colours used in the face, with the lighter dots on the darker background and the darker dots on the lighter background – a clever technique. I am genuinely looking forward to seeing loads more from Zace in 202 because I like what I have seen in 2020.

About 18 months ago I was on a secondment with my work, and spent two days a week in Westminster. This gave me the opportunity to reacquaint myself with parts of London as a visitor, rather than as a Londoner, which I am originally, having been brought up in North London. I left in my twenties, lived in different parts of the country and abroad and have been settled in Bristol now for about 26 years or so.

The great thing about seeing things through a visitor’s eyes is that nothing is ignored or taken for granted, every small detail examined and logged. It is so easy to miss that with which you are most familiar.

So…to the door. This door is in the wall surrounding Westminster Abbey garden, a door which most people simply walk past. For me it is not the wood or hinges, or even the sombre utilitarian sign that holds the interest, but it is the surrounding doorway, the mix of stonework and the way it is keyed into the wall itself that I am attracted to. Of course, there is also the mystery…What lies beyond? Who goes there? How can you get in?
