A recent visit to Bristol by Logoe and Mamil has caused a bit of a stir. The artists are not residents of Bristol, and are not so very much in touch with the wall protocols. Unfortunately, they painted over a tribute wall to Dorns under Brunel Way, and the piece was immediately tagged as being disrespectful. Another of their collaborations in St Werburghs was given the same treatment. It can be a jungle out there, and it is often advisable not to paint over a tribute piece, or anything that you might believe is a tribute.

I am familiar with the blitz visits of Logoe over recent years, but Mamil is new to me, and it looks like Logoe has found a kindred spirit script graffiti writer. This is a proper collaboration with a shared house sty;e in terms of colours and background. Both artists have adopted a script style, but Mamil’s is, in this example, finer than Logoe’s, and is in the form of a bicycle. Clever stuff. More to come from this pair, and their tagged pieces are shown below.

I don’t often feature dogged or tagged pieces, but I think that there is enough of this Nice One piece to warrant a post. Nice One is a bit of an enigma, painting some wonderful combination pieces and writing in a crisp, clean Times or similar font, all wholesome stuff, and then there is the edge part of his work, where he might paint his letters high up on a building there for posterity – more of this to come soon.

In this piece, a bearded character with a fisherman’s beanie is glancing across at the words Nice One, written in a fine script with some hatching in the contained spaces. A blue bordered rectangle adds structure to the piece. All very nice until you see the draft outline by the newish graffiti writer NONE – he must have been disturbed, and never finished his throw up.

1592. The Bearpit (151)

A quick one in The Bearpit from Face 1st going back a little. The main reason that I have posted this is because I remember at the time being incenced by the aggressive graffiti cross in the middle of the face with its far right connotations. When I see this kind of disruption, my immediate thought is ‘what kind of idiot would do this?’. I guess I still find myself constantly challenged by this mindless behaviour. I know that pretty much all artists expect this on the street, but it doesn’t necessarily make it right.

I don’t think I will ever tire of Face 1st’s work, and I get real pleasure out of each and every piece of his that I find.
