Although this piece by Dai Luk has been dogged by some silly kid, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to post it here. There is a serenity and lightness of touch in this illustrative character piece that is quite out of the ordinary.

This, I think, is the first piece I have seen by Dai Luk, who is a tattooist, like so many other street artists these days. A cross-legged figure sits in a meditative pose behind a large leaf, that might be symbolic of the body life, or at least that is what it says to me. I love the peace of the work and the soft colours. A fine mindful character piece.

Because Bristol is well known for its street art and graffiti scene, we tend to see a lot of visiting artists passing through and dropping a piece or two. I don’t actually know where these two artists, El Ruby Tattoo and Umbrelle, are from, but they have combined well to create this double-header on the M32 roundabout.

Both artists are tattoo artists, and they were painting with Kid Crayon and Tera (I think), so there was a strong tattoo connection. The two character portraits are very different, but both are rather good, and they work well side by side. It is a bit of a shame that the bright sunshine has cast a few shadows on the uneven surface, but that is the price you pay for nice weather.

Usually when I photograph collaborative work, especially from the PWA crew, I tend to post all of the pieces together, which risks a little, the dilution of impact of each of the contributing artists. Sometimes I like to decouple the collaboration to be able to concentrate on a single piece and this is what I have done with this fine cartoon piece by Chill.

This piece by Chill was painted as part of the celebratory paint jam for Werm’s birthday, an event that generates a great turnout every year. Chill has come on such a long way over the last few years and his cartoon-style character pieces betray his tattoo artist background, with strong clear black (ink) outlines and interesting designs. He also includes some ornamentation, usually little birds and greenery, but here in the form of skulls with plasma bursts emanating from them. This is a great example of Chill’s fabulous work.

For a little while now, Peggy has been brightening up dark corners of our streets with her beautiful floral designs.  This small piece is on the warehouse on the opposite bank of the river facing the Riverside Garden Centre. I don’t wander alongside the warehouse, so am not too sure how long the piece has been there. It is still looking pretty fresh though, however old.

Peggy’s style is instantly recognisable with its flowing shapes and beautiful tones, more often than not, an eye makes its way into the composition. It is easy to see the crossover between Tattoo art and street art in her pieces. This is a little beauty.

4187. St Werburghs tunnel (271)

It feels like barely a day goes by without posting something by Chill, such is the recent turnover from this revelation on the Bristol street art circuit. Although he has done the odd piece here and there, he really seems to have found some time and confidence to hit more walls more often.

Chill, St Werburghs, Bristol, December 2021

This is a fun character piece in St Werburghs tunnel with two cartoon portraits taking delight in a brown of milk. I have no idea what is going on here, a little bizarre I might say, but the artwork is clean and crisp as always. Creative, imaginative and a whole lot of joy from Chill, who is just going from strength to strength.

4176. M32 roundabout (376)

An artist who has certainly found his feet and confidence in Bristol is tattooist Chill. Over the last few weeks Chill has been hitting walls hard with some outstanding black and white cartoon characters set on red or orange backgrounds. His work is very distinctive and beautifully finished.

I only wish my photographic skills were as slick as Chill’s finishing skills. My camera has been playing up for a while, and I think I am going to have to replace it. It has been a trusty partner and accompanied me on every walk for the last three or four years, but is gets a real bashing and is covered in spray paint from my own efforts in the garden. Getting in my excuses first. I only got one picture of this piece, all the others were blurred, which is so annoying.

Chill is a very classy addition to the Bristol street art collective. Brace yourself for a few more from this fabulous artist.

It is always great to stumble across a new artist, and especially one with a really unique style. This is one of two new pieces from debutant Klub2020, who I believe is another tattoo artist turning his skills to wall art, along with others like Sepr, 3Dom and Chill.

Klub2020, M32 roundabout, Bristol, December 2021
Klub2020, M32 roundabout, Bristol, December 2021

This piece hidden away on the M32 roundabout reminds me a little of the Pink Floyd ‘Relics’ album cover. There are sort of human figures running towards a scroll emblazoned with the name Klub all over it. Full of detail and interest, I am a little puzzled by the method he has used to get this quite unique finish to the piece.

Very welcome and very interesting.

4069. Dean Lane skate park (438)

On the big wall at Dean Lane is this wonderful collaborative piece from Etza and Chill, which absolutely demands to be looked at, there is no chance of passing it and not noticing it.

Etza, Dean Lane, Bristol, November 2021

The bright pink background is the perfect setting for the black and white characters. On the left is a piece by Etza, whose work I’ve not come across before. It will not surprise you to know that both of these artists are tattooists, and it shines through in these pieces. The skull design with a frog perched on top is beautifully worked, and a great advert for Etza’s skilful work.

To the right is a stunner from Chill, whose work I have recently featured on Natural Adventures a couple of times. The cartoon man looks like he has just been lifted from a kid’s comic of the 1970s and is full of character and fine detail. A magnificent piece.

This collaboration falls into that category where adjacent pieces have adopted the same colour scheme but each is a separate design, particular to the artist that painted it. Great to see, and just about still there when I looked yesterday.

3978. St Werburghs tunnel (260)

Here is one from the archive which I dedicate to Paul H, because he helped me to find it by supplying a date (late September 2019). It is by Chill, who made his debut on Natural Adventures about a week ago. It was following comments on that post that Paul pointed me in the direction of this piece, which I am pleased to share with you now. I love it the way things work out like this.

I believe Chill is a tattoo artist who occasionally paints walls, and you can see from the black and white colours and general design the tattooist’s hand. It is a bright and vibrant piece and confirms my view that Chill ought to hit Bristol’s walls more often.
