7158. M32 roundabout J3 (708)

Without doubt, the paint jam celebrating Ulow’s birthday was the best I have seen this year, fending off some very stiff competition. The whole wall on the western side of the roundabout was colour themed and coherent and each contributing artist absolutely nailed it.

Starting at the right hand side of the wall, the collaboration begins with this superb car piece by Minto. The old Citroen vehicle has been brought to life as an animation full of character. The van is one of those converted for street food, selling Mexican food… I love the sombrero on the roof. The words read ‘Ulow, Me, High, Tacos’, which obviously makes some kind of sense to Minto.

I managed to get a wide-angle shot of the whole wall, which I will share at the end of each post from this paint jam. A real humdinger.

A few weeks ago I took my dog to the Groom Room at pets at home for his routine haircut and noticed this van parked next to the Halfords. Of course I recognised the artwork instantly as Farrah’s, and as I approached the van I saw Farrah sitting inside taking a break from a wall she was painting nearby. I knocked on her window (which might have appeared a bit creepy) and introduced myself, told her about my blog and that I had written about several of her pieces. I think it took a couple of minutes chatting about her work, that I wasn’t some kind of weirdo.

The van and its stunning decoration need little explanation as it is representative of her unique brush stroke style which she has mastered and which is visible all over the city. The highlight of this occasion was that Farrah tipped me off about a huge wall and paint jam that would be happening the following week a stone’s throw away from where we were talking. The event she was talking about was Goldie’s paint jam celebrating 30 years of Metal Headz, his music production company. More about this in due course.

It was a delight to meet Farrah at last, and it is always great to capture painted vehicles.

Every now and then you get lucky, being in the right place at the right time. This is particularly true of finding street art on vehicles, and I was fortunate enough to see this Stinkfish piece on the side of a van parked up outside St Werburghs City Farm around a week ago.

Some readers might remember that Stinkfuish visited Bristol in October 2021 to tidy up a couple of his long-standing pieces in the City, and while he was here he left a few other little ‘surprises’ about the place. I imagine he painted this small portrait piece at around the same time, as it is still in great condition.

If you look carefully, you can just see a black line on the left where paint spilled over from the stencil used to create the black and yellow elements of the portrait. The decorative aspect I think light have been painted on with a brush, although it might be a stencil too, I am not sure. Finding pieces like this is so rewarding, and gives me the same tingle of excitement I get when I find a large shark tooth fossil on Bracklesham Bay beach, on my occasional trips to West Sussex.

Taking the dog for a walk does have its plus points… just occasionally you walk down a different street – often the dog’s choice – and discover something new. Finding vans with street art is such a sweet pleasure because being mobile, the perception is that seeing them is something of a rarity. Finding a van as beautifully painted as this one by Inkie is a real treat.

Looking a little bit like the Scooby van, the artwork here by Inkie is simply exceptional and features two of his stylized beauties, one on each site of the van, and the hair curls swirling around all over. Great colour combinations and the skill of a brilliant artist make this van highly desirable, I mean who wouldn’t want it, even if only for a day?

2352. Elton Road

Being in the right place at the right time is a tenet that chimes for street art hunters, and finding this Cheo piece on a yellow van as I hopped off my bus on the way home from work, is a great example of that.

I have never seen this van before, although I expect I’ll keep on seeing it now (that is the way of things) and the bee motif used by Cheo works so very well here. It is a subtle piece of van art, not too showy and only on this one wing of the van. Mobile street art at its best.

OK, so I am going to take you on a bit of journey over the next few posts back to earlier in the year. Somehow these pieces got left behind (and there are many more where they came from), but now is as good a time to share them as any.

This is a van with a 3Dom piece on it, which I didn’t recognise at first as one of his until I saw the signature. It is always nice to see street art on vehicles, because the chance of seeing it is so much more remote than on static walls. I normally associate 3Dom with his surreal characters, but his writing is equally masterful and this is a great bit of mobile work.

1270. Camden Town van (2)

Following on swiftly from my last post, I have another van from Camden Town, beautifully decorated, this time by Sr.X, a Spanish street artist who now resides in London.

His work reminds me very much of the cartoons created by Glen Baxter. There is a retro feel going on here which is peppered with contemporary references and some quirky dark humour.

This is a beautifully worked piece that I feel very lucky to have stumbled across. It always pays to keep your eyes open. You can see more of Sr.X’s stunning work on his website.

1269. Camden Town van (1)

On a trip to Camden Town in November 2017 I took a very long stroll around the area part of which took in this backstreet where market sellers parked up their vans. This being Camden Town I guess it should have come as no surprise that the vans would have been finely decorated by London street artists.

Himbad and Dotmaster, Camden Town, London, November 2017

This van played host to Himbad and Dotmaster whose collaboration works beautifully as Dotmaster’s stencilled children pull back covers to reveal a cutely frightening Himbad monster and host of monster eyes. I really love this piece and would love to see both of these artists make a trip to Bristol. One day maybe.
