Cousins

I thought I’d try something a bit different, inspired by some lovely poetry I read here. This is the first poem I have written since school (other than Haiku). Be gentle.

Cousins

So different were we,

I from London and you from Leeds.

I remember one time

when we went out walking,

you pointed up to the sky and cried

‘eh up, there’s kite’

I didn’t know what you had said at first.

We are not so different now

you and I,

our age has smoothed out our differences

our age has brought us closer

it is our age that now defines us.

I am Stephen. I live in Bristol, UK. I decided to shorten my profile...to this: Wildlife, haiku, travel, streetart, psychogeography and my family. Not necessarily in that order.

  1. Wonderful! This is tender without being what my dad would have called “schmaltzy”. I hope this is the beginning of a new poetic journey!
By the way, did you change your url? I couldn’t find you in my reader, but I have rectified this. 😉

      1. I quite often have no idea what I’m doing with WordPress! it is all a bit random. This afternoon I managed to publish something but it published as if it were five days ago and interfered with my sequencing. That’ll teach me to number posts! all ok now.

      2. I used to be on Blogger for quite a number of years, but I do prefer WordPress, as it is much easier to connect with like-minded individuals.

I usually post to “My Life in Runes” from my iPad app for WP. It’s much simpler, I find, than using the website.

For the other blogs, I have to go on my laptop (which lately, frustrates me no end – I miss my old desktop with Windows 7; W10 is a hateful!)
to write anything of length that usually requires editing.
I’m all set to get your posts – in whichever order they may arrive. 😉

      3. That’s good. I use my mobile phone when I am in London for the Haiku, but all the street art stuff is on the PC to get the image sizes down etc. I tend to write in batches these days as I don’t get PC time every day!

      4. I got a new camera for my birthday in June and it’s great, but the photo editor with Windows 10 is a nightmare. I used to use Picasa (a Google thing), but it doesn’t even exist anymore.
I write on impulse usually; it’s an extremely random thing for me.

  2. I wanted to read this again. I like how you use the remembrance of that one colloquialism to define the difference between you at that age. Very effective. This is a quiet, memorable poem. I hope you choose to write more.
