I remember as a kid, looking out of an upstairs window each evening in Autumn and winter waiting for the lamp-lighter to come with his rod with a hook in the end to light the street lamp. Yes, Lawrence Hill at Ducie road still had gas lighting. He always had a little ladder and he carried a haversack over his shoulder with replacement filaments just in case the lamp had burnt out.
