Doors 338 – Doors of Marrakesh and some bonus cats, January 2025 (Part XVIII)
When I went on holiday to Marrakesh with my wife and daughter last January for a little bit of winter sun, not in my wildest dreams did I think that one of the legacies would be 18 posts of Thursday Doors. I have really enjoyed sharing this series of doors, all the while reliving moments and experiences from our trip.
This final selection is a sweep-up of the last remaining doors and, as promised in an earlier post, some cool cats of Marrakesh.
There is a large population of feral cats in Marrakesh, that although they don’t appear to belong to anyone in particular, seem to benefit from a collective responsibility of citizens to offer them food and shelter. For cat lovers, it is a joy to see these streetwise characters around every corner, in shops, markets, derelict buildings and so on, and the people of the city demonstrate a tenderness and affection in the curation of them. I hope you enjoy this final selection from Marrakesh, and thank you for sticking with it:

And now some cats:

And that, my friends, really is it from Marrakesh… I promise. I now have the wonderful challenge of deciding which doors to share next time. Have a great Thursday and weekend.
If you have made it this far, you probably like doors, and you really ought to take a look at the No Facilities blog by Dan Anton who has taken over the hosting of Thursday Doors fromย Norm 2.0 blog. Links to more doorscursions can be found in the comments section of Dan Antonโs weekly Thursday Doors post and his Sunday recap.

It really is a tantalising place when it comes to doors, isn’t it? A photo around every corner xx

Difficult not to see something exciting with each footstep.

Lovely place that I have never visited. My fave door is the 5th one with the wooden carvings.

Thank you, Stephen, for sharing your Marrakesh visit. I thoroughly enjoyed the photos of a place that, as I mentioned, has a special “call” to me to visit one day. I love the cats; they all look pretty chill, especially the one hanging out under the mannequin. I also love the four-door photo and the mini doors; to me they are iconic of Marrakesh doors and architecture.
*Just a note, I am impressed with the amount of drainage and sewage covers around the city, as seen in your photos. They seem to be present at many doorways and in the city streets. Thank you also for your attention to details in your photography…they add for me a sense of place that is much appreciated.

Thank you, Suzette, as ever, for your observations. You mention the drain covers. I hadn’t really thought about it, but for the most part the city appears to have a good drainage/sewerage system (Perhaps the French influence). Rarely were we confronted with bad smells, but it was still early in the year, and the sun wasn’t too hot.

You are welcome, Stephen.
P.S. I did not know there was a French influence in this city. Another great subject for me to research on Marrakesh. Thank you!

Great doors, Steve. I love seeing that there were doors for sale. I think they’re onto something. I also love seeing the cats. They have such a way of just melting my heart. I’m looking forward to the next adventures, but I thoroughly enjoyed Marrakesh!

The doors for sale were key hangers, I think, great idea. I simply couldnโt leave the cats out, they are such a part of the character of the old Medina.
