- I made a late New Year’s resolution, which was to learn a Shakespeare speech, and yesterday I mastered the ‘All the world’s a stage‘ speech from As you like it as spoken by Jaques. It is not a play I know, but the speech is very well known.
Not only is this a fun thing to do, it helps with a bit of brain training too. Next up is to re-learn Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day’, which I first learned at school.
I’m impressed. I remember my son revising for an English exam in his late teensnn- They’d studied Romeo and Juliet and were expected to use quotations of course in their answers. I asked him the night before to quote me a few…
‘Oh happy Dagger’ – those 3 words – were the extent of his repertoire!

Ha ha, that is very funny. When I was in my early twenties I learned the Queen Mab speech from Romeo and Juliet – I have since forgotten it, and it is on my list to re-learn.

Now I have it, I recite it while doing chores around the house. Waiting for the kettle to boil is a perfect amount of time to complete it.

I’ve recently done ‘Tomorrow…’ and was considering sonnet 18. See you at the Globe!

Oh, Bravo you!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
In high school I took an all-Shakespeare class in my final year. We had to memorize one soliloquy and of course, I chose Ophelia’s mad speech from Hamlet.😂 “Here’s rosemary for remembrance …”
I think I’ll revisit that. Thanks for the inspiration!

There is so much material to work on. It would be great if I could get five or six speeches/sonnets under my belt this year.
