4306. Cumberland Basin

This recent collaboration by Sepr and Acer replaces a Valentines Day piece by this pair last year. I wonder if this piece had been planned to be a repeat to mark the day of lovers, but got delayed for a while. Whatever, it is a truly outstanding collaboration, sharp, clean and tidy.

On the left is a rather clumsy Cupid figure who has somehow managed to shoot himself in the foot with an arrow. Sepr has an amazing ability to bring his characters to life, and tell big stories. The shadows are supremely well painted and lift the character right off the wall.

To the right, Acer has written LOVE in a lettering style that he appears to be playing with a lot at the moment, judging by recent posts on his Instagram feed. Rainbow colours on nicely designed regular letters… a fabulous font design. Altogether brilliant.

4140. Cumberland Basin

Underneath the flyover complex in Cumberland Basin, in a spot favoured by the artist, is this magnificent recent piece by Acer. The stylised work depicts the Clifton Suspension Bridge that would be visible from this spot were it not for all the concrete.

Acer has many strings to his bow, and this geometric piece has a stained-glass window appearance. It is beautifully designed and very calming in a less than calming environment. Superb work in a spot that he has painted before.

4113. M32 roundabout (366)

It is clear that Acer and Benjimagnetic enjoy painting together, and having met them both in the tunnel last week they seem to get along really well. This collaboration was painted about a month or so back, and shows the deeply contrasting styles of their work, and indeed is a great example of how varied graffiti writing can be.

On the left is a nice piece by Acer, which reads TOBY13, and is a lovely birthday tribute for his son Toby. Carefully designed and regimented, Acer’s work is measured out and masked using a meter-long thin plank. The final effect is dazzling, and it can take a while to get your eye in to be able to read his letters.

To the right is an outstanding piece from Benjimagnetic that is another great example of his newer style I talked about a few days ago. Less ephemeral and more solid than some of his more familiar work and so full of colour and energy. The letters are very cryptic, but if you know that he usually writes BEN then it becomes easier to see.

This is a really fabulous collaboration.

Another Bristol artist who has been very busy over the last eighteen months or so is Acer. Whether collaborating or painting alone, his productivity has been on the up, and that is definitely a good thing.

This quick piece was painted alongside Benjimagnetic, way back in August this year, but inexplicably ended up in my archive. I have picked it up and posted it as part of my constant review of photographs languishing in archive folders. Here Acer is keeping it simple, spelling out his name with his familiar geometric design and technique.
