It has been a long while since I last posted a piece by Todoaciem, so it is with some pleasure that I am able to share this wonderful piece of calligraffiti painted at the ‘Dare To’ paint jam a few weeks ago.

Normally we would expect to see the letters CIEM, but here he has written HMR, the letters of his crew. His letters are always so neat and uniform with a lovely deep 3D shadow that helps the whole thing to stand out. Unfortunately, the white paint is a little thin, but all in all this is a skilful piece of writing.

I am so enjoying the work of Maesyhook. Ever since I first came across her work, I have been hypnotised by her refreshing and quirky pieces. I thought I had her taped until I saw this piece outside the Dare To club. I have no idea what this piece is or what it represents, but the colours are the ones she uses most in her work, those and her signature are what bring continuity.

I’ll attempt to describe the piece. The pink element is reasonably straightforward and is a snake or serpent. The green circles might be apples, so is there an Old Testament reference here? If there is, then the blue element could be Adam and Eve, but on closer inspection it looks like a hand. OK, I’ll quit while I am ahead and simply enjoy a piece from one of my ‘flavour of the month’ artists.

Every year there is a special paint jam that takes place outside the Dare To club in St Philips. I haven’t yet managed to get to one of these paint jams, which is a pity, but it is hard to be everywhere always. This year’s session seems to have been largely confined to a couple of walls and fences in Alfred Street, rather than on the Dare To building itself.

This post features a rather unlikely collaborative wall shared by Emotional Waterfall Art and T-Rex. I first encountered Emotional Waterfall Art’s work earlier in the year with her massive Upfest mural. What a contrast this is to that, a small and beautifully colourful ball or globe – the Earth maybe? The message – More Love.

Next to the globe is a rather sweet looking Tyrannosaurus Rex surrounded by ‘butterfly’ hearts and the tag line ‘Nuff Love’. I imagine T-Rex must be able to paint these dinosaurs in her sleep, she has done so many of them, but they all have their own special personality. An interesting combination.

This wall has been something of a treasure trove since it was painted at the Raw Wax paint jam at the back end of August. It is great to have a business in Bristol, in this instance Dare To, that welcomes street artists to decorate its walls, particularly in this rather dreary industrial estate.

This piece is by Ware who is one of the RAW artists that seems to paint less regularly than some of the others in the crew. Such rarity adds value, and it is great to see a piece of intricate writing like this. The character is the Cheshire Cat from the Disney adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Each piece in this particular wall is composed of writing with a character and it is so worth a visit.

On the opposite side of the Dare To building from the Smak piece in my previous post on Natural Adventures is a fine quintet of pieces of which this is one. Each piece hosts the writers name together with a little character. This gorgeous rhapsody in green is by Hemper.

Spelling out HEMS, this intricate piece is absolutely amazing and incredibly detailed. The letters seem to pop out all over the place thanks to the skillful 3D shading effects. This is a work by a fine craftsman. I’m not too sure who the little green character is to the top left, but I think I recognise him from a contemporary cartoon series.

The paint jam at Dare To a couple of weeks ago really did throw up some fantastic work from an ‘A’ list of Bristol artists and it would seem that each artist bounced off the next to up their game a little.

This is a cheeky number (getting into the spirit of the adult nature of the Dare To club) by Smak. Tucked away, and slightly awkward to photograph, this bright and colourful piece includes a little devil complete with cherries on his pants. The writing is typically top quality and has that double letter style where each letter seems to have been painted twice over. More excellent work from Smak.

As part of a recent paint jam, the walls of the Dare To nightclub were given something of a stupendous makeover and would be the envy of many a building in Bristol. This piece was one of four on this elevation and is by Inkie.

It would seem that Inkie is spending a lot of time in the Bristol area at the moment and is hitting a lot of walls. I can’t think of a time when I have seen so many new pieces from him in such a short space of time. We are being spoilt. This is a particularly nice one in pink, featuring the one and only Pink Panther. A real beauty and so typically Inkie if you know what I mean.

3174. Alfred Street (3)

Every year or two, something wonderful happens on the walls of the Dare To adult night club in the form of the Raw Wax Graffiti Jam (thank you Paul). This year’s paint jam was truly exceptional in terms of the pieces created, sadly I didn’t make it on the day, but took some pictures a day or two later.

This full wall piece is an extraordinary and quite brilliant collaboration from Zase and Silent Hobo, full of colour and vibrancy, lifting the spirits in an industrial part of Bristol that is far from inspiring. It is incredible what a lift great street art can give to an area, changing the whole character of a place and this collaboration does that in spades.

On the left hand side Zase has created one of his beautiful 3D anamorphic signatures set on a background of what look like Swiss cheese plant leaves (a favourite for street artists). On the right are a couple of large Bristol youths, always so beautifully portrayed by Silent Hobo. The whole thing works very well indeed and I am not too sure that these two have worked together before, but the result is amazing

2830. Alfred Street (2)

Not all that long ago I was saying on Natural Adventures that I don’t post enough pieces by T-Rex, so here is a gorgeous winnged dinosaur from her on the recently discovered (by me) Alfred Street wall. There piece is linked with the Aspire piece to the right by incorporating toadstools, and an alien theme.

T-Rex has absolutely nailed these cartoon-style characters and they appear all over Bristol, often on caravans and vans that people live in dotted about the place. At any one time you are never too far away from one of these dinosaurs. This is an uplifting and happy piece, and I guess we could all do with a bit of happiness in our lives at the moment.

Yesterday, the UK went into lockdown which means that artists shouldn’t be spraying on the streets and I won’t be out taking photographs. This will give me an opportunity to go back through my archives and share with you pieces that deserve to be liberated. Watch this space for pieces going back as far as 2015.
