This is something the same, but also a little different from Scrapyardspec under Brunel Way. He has used a buffed pillar (a crazy scheme devised by Bristol City Council to eradicate graffiti, which only serves to create nice clean new ‘canvasses’) to act as a solid backdrop to one of his wobbly characters.

Instead of filling the piece with colour, like all of his other pieces, he has gone for a simple white fill which works so well against the grey. The piece is clean and almost looks like a giant sticker, rather than a painted piece. Scrapyardspec has injected some great creativity into his standard character.

This piece is right up my street, a beautifully painted beetle in striking colours, by an artist I don’t know and whose name I have guessed at as RA. This was one of a few pieces painted in a single session, which makes me think the artist was a visitor, passing through.

I don’t know what technique was used to paint the piece, but at a guess I would say it was a stencil over a green background, which has been augmented with some Posca pen detail. The end result is unique and rather special. RA is an artist I’d really like to find more information on. Love this piece.

On the pathway alongside the River Avon, that leads to the Brunel Way bridge and flyover, is a small wall which appears to be a relic from a small outbuilding that must have had some function (perhaps a pump station), probably related to the river. It seems odd that this ruin wasn’t completely demolished, but what remains has become quite a popular wall for graffiti artists.

The most recent visitor to this wall is Scrapyardspec, who is an expert in finding small nooks and crannies all over the city to paint his googly-eyed, goofy character pieces. This character appears to have no outline, just features, plastered on the wall. Three eyes, three noses and one long toothy mouth make up this harmless fellow, joining countless others about the place. Scrapyardspecs’ visits to Bristol seem to be getting more frequent, which is no bad thing.

This is the middle piece of a Zinso-fest from earlier in the month underneath Brunel Way. The white buffed wall was the perfect opportunity for Zinso to practice his writing, and practice he did, turning out six pieces, three large and three small.

The bubble writing in the larger piece is beautifully decorated, each letter having its own colour scheme and one or two with spots as well. The ‘O’ at the end has a cheeky face for good measure. Similarly, the smaller signature piece in red also has a cheeky face, but appears to have a letter (S) missing. The full wall is shown below.

One of the great pleasures of walking around town seeking out street art is that you get to find things that are remarkable and mysterious. It can be like finding treasure, and perhaps that is why I enjoy it so much. I found this magnificent frog (unfortunately a bit scuffed by bike tyre marks) under Brunel Way, just minding its own business.

I don’t know who painted the piece, and can’t think of any artist I know who would paint such a beauty and not sign it (reminds me a little of Hazard’s work). The perspective and depth that has been achieved points towards a very talented and experienced artist. Creatures of the natural world are always going to get great praise from me, and this one is an absolute peach, which left me very happy.

Zinso has made a big impression in Bristol in recent months having burst onto the scene earlier this year. He took over this entire wall, buffed it out with white paint and then painted six pieces, in pairs, each with a small and a large piece. I guess it is one way of getting in some practice. I have split the total production into three posts of which this is the first.

Both the small and large piece are in a bubble-writing style, although the larger one is rather more sophisticated. The small piece has alternate colours for the letters, has a tidy drop shadow and neat red border. Great work. As for the larger piece, the fills are absolutely magnificent. Big, bold colours and some really nice shapes resembling calligraphy, create an outstanding overall impression. This is the work of a skilled, technical artist having a great day out. Corupt, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025
Corupt, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025

This is simply a really classy piece from Corupt (who writes the letters ‘Corupt’ or ‘Stick’ mostly) on a wall/skate ramp, tucked away at the southern end of the Brunel Way spot.

The piece is good in every respect. The colour selections work beautifully, The quirky letters fill the space of the ramp perfectly, and the overall finishing is tight as a nut. Corupt has been turning out some outstanding pieces recently and i very highly regarded in his homeland of Hungary, so I am told.

Kool Hand, Mr Crawls and Bean, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025
Kool Hand, Mr Crawls and Bean, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025

Well this is an unusual trio, but nonetheless a very welcome collaboration from Kool Hand, Mr Crawls and Bean. On closer inspection, I am guessing that it is actually two distinct pieces, a collaboration from Kool Hand and Mr Crawls and an independent piece by Bean, which is perhaps why it looks like an unusual coming together.

Kool Hand has been painting a lot this year, spreading his time between writing and characters. This piece is a profile of his famous orangutan character, which is synonymous with the artist. Constantly improving, Kool Hand has added more detail with shading and complexion.

Mr Crawls just keeps on going with his gulls, and I just keep on going with photographing them when I see them. This is a nice one painted in his stylised cartoon format – nice and sharp. Difficult to read the expression on this one.

Bean, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025

Finally, Bean, who has made a quiet comeback in recent weeks, has painted this exquisite piece with two characters in blue tones spraying the wall. The larger character looks like he is ‘high’ floating on the fumes from the paint can. They have been busy painting the letters BEAN. This is beautifully presented, and it is a great pity that some wally has plastered mud on the piece – what is wrong with some people? A refreshing wall, that didn’t last to long.

Mr Draws, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025
Mr Draws, Brunel Way, Bristol, May 2025

Mr Draws has been a long-standing green campaigner, and every once in a while he reminds us of that, often with the help of Whales, the symbol of the global need for conservation, alongside the polar bear and panda. Indeed, whales have been something of a success story, with populations of most species recovering since the ban on hunting for whales. The success could only be achieved through a global agreement, which had a couple of unhelpful exceptions, and cooperation, which is a lesson we need to take forward for other global issues.

This piece has a wonderful sense of peace about it, and a tone of regret and remorse. The whale is set in a nicely presented sea of blue and chrome, frames in a pink box. Keep up the good work, Mr Draws… keep reminding us.
