5710. Cumberland Basin

Bnie and Unity, Cumberland Basin, Bristol, November 2023
Bnie and Unity, Cumberland Basin, Bristol, November 2023

So far this year I have only found one Christmas piece and this collaboration from Bnie and Unity is it. The fabulous duo were painting alongside several other members of the RBF crew during a paint jam in support of the people of Palestine. This piece is absolutely draped in Christmas good cheer.

To the left, Bnie has painted her letters in a festive silver colour with a string of Christmas lights weaving in and out of them. The Palestinian flag features prominently and Father Christmas does what Father Christmas does to the right. I think that Bnie painted him, but equally it might have been Unity.

Unity has been visiting Bristol a little more frequently recently and that can only be a good thing as it means we get to see more of her brilliant work. Unity continues the themes and colours that Bnie has adopted, with the only real difference being a splash of gold in the ‘I’ of Unity. Another Palestinian flag indicates firmly that the public mood in Bristol, which this art reflects, is with the innocent people of Palestine, who played no part in the Hamas attack but are paying an unimaginably high price by the Israeli response to it. Let us hope for and demand peace in the region.

4930. St Werburghs tunnel (335)

Wispa, St Werburghs, Bristol, December 2022
Wispa, St Werburghs, Bristol, December 2022

There was a little bit of an RBF crew party in the tunnel just before Christmas, with a great turnout, and one of the artists, whose work I have not seen much of, is Wispa. Her writing and character might have been the pick of the bunch on account of the snowman, I mean who can resist this guy at Christmas?

Wispa is clearly an accomplished writer who typically writes WISP and occasionally adds a character, and with this piece she has smashed both. The letters are nice ones to play with, and give plenty of scope for fills, curves and straight lines. The triple border works really well, picking out the letters and helping them to stand out from the wall.

Raymond Briggs, may he rest in peace, would have loved this faithful rendition of his loveable character, right down to the cross-hatching on his hat and scarf. This is a fabulous Christmas piece from Wispa. I hope she comes back to Bristol soon with more great work.

4907. River Avon (37)

Werm, River Avon, Bristol, December 2022

The paint on this piece was only a day old when I sauntered past it the day before yesterday, and I can’t tell you how pleased I was to find it, as I haven’t seen very many Christmas pieces this year, certainly not compared to normal, although there was a late burst from the Resting Bitch Face crew in St Werburghs Tunnel this week.

Werm seems to love the walls alongside the River Avon, and there are several of his pieces down there to enjoy. His letters are really beautifully constructed and painted in festive colours, and it is amazing to think how much progress he has made over the last couple of years. The addition of Father Christmas is an extra bonus, and perfect for a Christmas post. Season’s greetings all, Ho! Ho! Ho!
