Life is full of nice surprises, and this was certainly one of them. Every once in a while, Xenz pays a visit to Bristol and leaves behind some exquisite artwork. I found this one on my ’rounds’ a week or two back and was extra pleased because I hadn’t seen in on social media, and it must have been pretty new.

Xenz specialises in creating fantasy pieces that portray those ‘sunlit uplands’ we hear so much about from our useless government. This piece of clever writing, spelling XENZ features classical buildings, statues and gardens perched on walls and hillsides, set in a pink, otherworldly landscape/cloudscape. Inspirational excellence from Xenz.

2244. Upfest 2018 (146)

The joy of Upfest is that as a visitor, you are guaranteed to see a huge spectrum of amazing street art, and in my view one of the most inspiring artists in 2018 was Piet Rodriguez. This is the second piece by the artist that I have posted, the first one being on the front of a shop on North Street, next door to the Standard. Unfortunately (for us) the shop has changed hands and has been renovated, which means that the wooden frontage (a yard gate) that boasted Piet Rodriguez’s other work is now freshly painted in gray.

His style and content is really interesting, combining a classical representation of sculpture and adding some modern abstract elements to it, not unlike the work of PichiAvo. Brilliant execution and a shining star at Upfest 2018.

2113. Upfest 2018 (140)

This is a really interesting small piece by Bristol/Bath artist Harry Grech who I understand from his Bio has a passion for using spray paint. I don’t think he does much street work, or if he does I haven’t seen any which is more the pity because this is magnificent.

A wonderful blend of a classical subject and modern a modern style combine to create something quite special and fairly unique. I didn’t see the artist at work so am not sure what technique was used, but it looks like a stencil which might have been oversprayed with the angular sections… so difficult to tell. It would be great to see more of his work.

1540. Upfest 2017 (173)

One of the more academic and mind-blowing pieces at Upfest 2017 was this absolutely stunning classical style piece by Mezla. I managed to catch up with him while he was painting this piece and he said that he was supposed to be using the boards down at Ashton Gate, but that he found the music just a little bit too loud for his liking, so he crossed over the road and found this wall.

I absolutely love the way he has combined abstract work with some life form, and the subtle shades and colours are perfect. This really is one of my favourites from Upfest 2017 and is so very different from pretty much everything else on display.

I don’t think I can praise this piece highly enough. His Upfest biography reveals how he started off as a writer but has moved on since.
