Doors 133 – an annual review 2020

It is the custom on Thursday Doors to post our favourite doors from the year on the Thursday before Christmas, so in this Coronavirus-impacted year, here are some of mine. All of these doors were posted in 2020, but some were photographed before that. I hope you enjoy them, and wherever you are may I wish you a happy Christmas and an infinitely better 2021.

This has been a very tough year for all citizens of the world, and that includes us door enthusiasts. Doorscursions have been quite hard to come by. Let’s all hope that next year brings us some relief from the coronavirus pandemic and we can seek out a new and better normal life.

A little rummage through my desktop archives revealed some doors I photographed on a work trip I took to Dorchester back in June last year, when life was so much less complicated. Rather than feed you a diet of street art doors every week, I thought I’d switch it up a bit with this little collection. Enjoy.

A real rush to get these doors out – 10 minutes between finishing work and going off to play 5-a-side football… so not much of a story here, simply some more doors from a trip to Dorset some three weeks ago.

Thursday doors – 27 June 2019

Doors 76 – Dorchester doors (1)

I went to a meeting in Dorchester last week and had quite a lot of time to kill either side of the meeting and my train journeys. I have never been to the town before, so there was an obvious doorscursion opportunity, and what an appropriately named place for such a thing.

The town left me a little puzzled. Compared to Bristol it is a rather sleepy and sedate place although both share an extraordinary history and abominable post-war architecture. The most striking thing was the abundance of retirees as a proportion of the total population. Maybe this was an artifact of the time of day I was visiting, I don’t know.

Because of its Roman heritage I had imagined ancient doors all over the place, but instead there was a curious mix of old, new, weird and beautiful doors. You’ll be glad to hear there were no graffiti doors in Dorchester.

To Dorchester

 

The engine drags us through

a rich and verdant land

lush from unusually heavy summer rains

 

The rhythm is punctuated by small stations

boasting tidy flowerbeds and once busy buildings

that slumber now as polluting cars

offer a more convenient means of travel

 

I am afforded the luxury of time to think

and to stare out of the window

where I see my life dashing by

each blade of grass a memory lost

 

Closer now to my destination than to my home

the journey has passed all too quickly

I should have liked a little more time, just a little,

to have lingered a while at each of the stops along the way.
