One of the truly enjoyable facets of 2023, has been the appearance of Mr Crawls and his wacky bird portraits. Even better has been the way he has started to switch it up a little bit, with variations on a theme. For a little while at the start, there was a risk that he might get categorised as a one-trick pony, but recent evidence completely indicates otherwise.

This piece at the farm end of the tunnel presents his gull character with horns and spikes emerging from the top of its head. Perhaps most notably, the empty eye sockets define this piece and contribute to the overall intrigue it offers. A little bit chilling and odd, the piece definitely catches the eye, and isn’t quite as endearing as some of his other pieces. This is a good thing, as Mr Crawls develops and grows.

In the spring of this year, I became aware of some seagull (these days simply known as gulls) portraits appearing in most of the north Bristol graffiti spots. I haven’t posted any until now, because I wasn’t sure who was responsible for them. It turns out (with thanks to Paul H) that the artist is called Mr Crawls.

The gull, which has a very pleasing design formed out of a couple of circles, fits into the kind of mega-tag category, in which the basic design changes little from piece to piece, and the stamp/brand becomes highly recognisable – other artists who do this include TES (Slim Pickings), Asre and Mr Underbite. The gull looks like he is a little worse for wear, and rather American in his fishing-style bucket hat. Expect to see more from Mr Crawls.

replaced with traffic.

1257. Upfest 2017 (121)

It has been a little while since I last posted anything from Upfest 2017. I would guess I am about half way through my archive of photographs but am unlikely to write up every piece from the festival before this year’s festival begins. C’est la vie.

This piece is a hugely entertaining and bold work from Boe and Irony, who worked so well together at Upfest 2016 with their cat and mouse work on the side of a residential building just off North Street.

Gulls are a very common sight in Bristol, and this huge portrait of a gull peering around the corner so perfectly captures the cheeky nature of these birds, and is in keeping with the City.

The artists took a while to complete the piece and it wasn’t actually until a few days after the festival that it was completed. It was so utterly worth the waiting though, this was one of the highlights of Upfest 2017, a real triumph. I hope the artists will be back this year to give us yet another mouth watering morsel.
