Mr Sce and Buser have collaborated before in Bristol, in pretty much this exact spot, from recollection. This time they were part of a wider paint jam which had something of a jungle theme, which has carried through into these pieces beautifully.

This blue and gold macaw, by Mr Sce is a beauty. Parrots of all types are a favourite of street artists, and when I have run out of new material to share I can do special posts featuring parrots or dogs or cats or specific cartoon characters – food for thought. Mr Sce has captured the attitude of this macaw really well, and done a great job.

Buser paints in Bristol a littler more often than Mr Sce, but still isn’t quite what I’d call a regular. This is a tidy piece of writing full of colour and surrounded by a variety of tropical plants and flowers. Very nice work indeed from the pait.

4041. Cumberland Basin

And here is yet another fine piece from Tack Jucker, the artist who just keeps on giving. This wonderful Macaw parrot head is so striking… it is big and bold and quite an unusual thing to see on the Bristol scene. Funnily enough, I would normally expect to see a piece like this painted on a buffed wall, but somehow just sticking it over other graffiti seems to work really well.

I know that Tack works from sketches and photographs and I imagine that this is probably taken from a stock photograph online. There is nothing wrong with that, Aspire does the same thing with his birds, and you can often find the Googled picture he has used.

This is another lovely piece from this relative newcomer to Bristol, and I am loving his work.

975. Upfest 2017 (35)

I spoke to many people after Upfest and this incredible macaw was considered to be one of the best pieces of the festival, and it is easy to se why. The composition is perfect, filling the awkward panels with consumate ease, the colours and flow of the feathers is magical, the piece is full of movement and spectacle. Taking a closer look, the work is composed of triangles that come together to create the whole. I love this kind of artistry, and the whole thing shows a creator at the top of their game.

The artist, Mehsos, is from Belgium – something special seems to be going on in Belgium, with Bisser and Dzia also producing outstanding pieces – and generally works with portraiture. It is interesting to read from the UPfest programme notes that Mehsos ‘deconstructs emotions and highlights contrasts both in terms of colour and message level’ I’m not entirely certain what this means, but I like it. One for the top ten.

259. North Street, Workout (2)

It recently occurred to me that I am going to have to work through my backlog of Upfest 2015 pieces, because it will not be too long before they get replaced during the 2016 extravaganza and appear a little out of date. July 23-25 will see an influx of 300 artists showing off their talent, and I have to say I can’t wait. Among them will be Louis Masai, a London based artist who is renowned for his beautiful animal works.

Louis Masai gained an art degree from Falmouth in Cornwall, and has been living in London since 2010. More about him from his own website. This is a beautiful picture of two macaws (I seem to have posted a lot of these lately) and a clear and simple message that they belong in the wild and not in cages. I can go with that. His work is outstanding and his presence in Bristol this year will be a real bonus.

 

238. Wilder Street (3)

I knew it existed and was determined to find it and, a little by accident, I did. This Hyacinth Macaw is instantly recognisable as an Aspire piece and it is absolutely magnificent. He just seems to get better and better.

The work, which was completed at the beginning of May, absolutely captures the macaw perfectly and brings it to life. The peculiar stoop that macaws exhibit fits the space so well. This is a clever and absolutely outstanding piece. What next I wonder.
