4271. Upper Byron Place

Another dabble in my archive threw up this old piece (photographed in 2016) by Jody on the side of what was once a magic club, and I think, a comedy club at the top end of Park Street. I don’t know why I never posted it before, but then again I could probably say that about most of my unseen/unpublished archive.

The piece has long-since gone, but is a reminder of Jody’s takent and versatility, as well as admiring the impact his work has had on the city over the years. I am not very good with the magis scene, but am guessing that the magician portraits are of Houdini and David Blaine. For a long time this mural was part of the furniture on Park Street, and it is a pity it is no longer there.

It is very nice to see a character piece from Rusk, and this is a bit of fun constructed around the theme of magic mushrooms. Is that still a thing? I am so old. It is also good to see these boards, which in my view are underused and underrated, getting the treatment from some of the best artists in Bristol.

This piece does its job well: the pun; the psychedelic colour selections and the execution come together to create fabulous whole. It would be great to see more turnover on this wall… especially as it is reasonably quick for me to walk there.

Annika Pixie has a lightness of touch that brings a spot of magic to her pieces. She is a fine artist and lovely warm person. For half the year she spends her time teaching in Thailand, and her Instagram feed is a constant stream of beaches and sunsets.

This piece for Upfest must have been completed early on the Saturday, because I never got to see her at work, which was a real pity – maybe this year.

‘Trick of the eye’ – this is a magnificent piece by one of my favourite Bristol artists, Sled One. In this one piece he has created an extraordinary fantasy world and constructed a brilliant piece of wildstyle writing into the mix as well.

The writing says ‘eye’, which is clever enough on its own, but it is the remarkable hand (protruding from the iris of the eye) pulling a rabbit from a magician’s top hat, hence the titlwe of the piece.

In my view, the magician of the piece is Sled One. He really is an extraordinary talent and creates these ‘stories’ like no other artist I have seen. While his story telling is great, it is the beautifully crafted characters that make these pieces. His imagination is allowed to run wild and he produces these surreal cartoon style creatures which are so full of interesting detail and demand to be studied.

This is an absolutely stunning piece of graffiti art that would hold its own on any wall anywhere in the world.

  • I saw this little doorway this morning. I love it when creative people do things like this. Heartwarming.
