It is a really long time since I last saw anything new from Moran, so I was very pleased to find this small column piece under the M32. When artists go quiet for months on end, I start to wonder what has happened, have they moved away, started a family, become really busy at work or simply lost their mojo? Sometimes I get to find out, but mostly it remains a mystery.

Morag is known for painting faces with a distinctive continuous line that makes up the features, and bold solid fills. The addition of the word ‘twisted’ adds interest and intrigue. This is a nice return to the streets, and I hope to see more before too long, it has been a long wait.

5555. Cumberland Basin

When I first saw this piece I wasn’t immediately sure who it was by, and the penny didn’t drop for several days, mainly because the central elements used by Morag are there, but the fruit somehow completely threw me off the scent.

Most of the Morag pieces I have seen to date have been individual faces, usually painted on columns. This piece is telling a bit of a story, and from a fruit perspective, perhaps a rather sinister story, the suggestion being that the large bully orange is extracting juice from a grape much to the consternation of the apple. The face drawing using a single line technique is the trademark style that gives the artist away. It has been a while so it was great to find this piece a few weeks back.

4475. Frome Side (14)

Because I don’t drop down into Frome Side all that often, access is difficult with the dog, most of the pieces are new (to me), and I get to photograph a lot of work. On my most recent trip, I was pleased to find two pieces by Morag, an artist whose work I really rather like.

With each new piece I find by Morag, there seems to be an elevated level of sophistication. More detail, more of an expression in the face, accessories like the hat seen in these pieces. It is a journey I am thoroughly enjoying and I look forward to seeing more around Bristol.

Both pieces share the characteristic style, but have quite different expressions, and the colour palettes are different too. Morag has joined a merry band of artists that like to do faces, including Slakarts, Zake and Asre – good company indeed.

4367. Purdown AA Battery (43)

I believe that this is the third Morag piece I have posted on Natural Adventures, and I must say that I really love what he does. The simplest of thick black lines in an apparently continuous loop painted on a single colour background to create a perfectly stylised face.

There is definitely something in the simplicity that brings out the design really well, and actually, the simplicity is a little more sophisticated than it might at first appear. This picture was taken on a very bright day, and unfortunately I have cast a shadow over the piece. Hey ho.

4255. Cumberland Basin

A few days ago I posted the debut piece from Morag on Natural adventures, and raved about the column piece on the opposite bank of the river to this one in Cumberland Basin. I sincerely hope that these are the beginning of more to come from the artist with such a unique style.

This piece is broader than the other one, with the luxury of a wider piece of wall. The character has a speech bubble with the words ‘nice view’ almost certainly a reference to the river and Clifton suspension bridge that can be seen from this spot. There is something about these faces that works so well, and I think it is the mouth, which is perfectly painted and orientated, with movement and character about it. Another cracking piece from Morag.

4245. Brunel Way (142)

This is absolutely amazing. This column piece is by yet another new artist on the Bristol scene, Morag, and it absolutely ticks all my boxes. Beautifully executed, with a unique style and endearing expression. There are so many things it reminds me of… Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures and Thomas the tank engine faces, for example.

This particular piece is the second one I have found in Bristol so far and I will be posting the other one very soon. I am not usually so fond of circular column pieces because they are so difficult to photograph, but this one can be forgiven because it is just so good and original. I am really looking to seeing from Morag this year – we need great creative stuff like this.
