Doors 104 – New York City paste up and sticker doors

Lock down continues and the weather has become a little unsettled, which adds up to a failure to find some new fresh doors for you this week, so it is a return to my archives and some doors from a family trip we took to New York in October 2017.

Each morning I would rise early and wander around the East Village area where out holiday appartment was and snap up some street art before the rest of the family got up – I combined shopping for breakfast with getting my street art fix, a win-win situation.

Many of the doors in the area were peppered from top to toe with wheatpastes and stickers. Here are a few of them to give you a flavour of the district:

There are two more Phoebe New York paste ups here, one above the boxer on the left and one at the bottom right of the door.

2010. East Village, New York (3)

Have a beautiful day! Wandering around East Village early in the morning before the rest of the family got up pretty much guaranteed that I would have a beautiful day, and that was before we’d even thought about sightseeing. Finding wheatpastes by Phoebe New York simply added to my state of happiness.

It is difficult to have regrets when you manage to see so much street art, but I know that there was a whole bunch more that I missed. Perhaps we’ll just have to go back again some day. Some of the Phoebe New York paste ups were really faded and looked rather less sophisticated than her more recent work, so I am guessing that some were already quite old.

Her modus operandi seems to be relatively straightforward…a PNY head stuck onto a cut-out of a model from a magazine and a message of some sort. It is a great idea, but the equally clever bit is in finding a great place to paste the piece up. Various doorways seemed to be favourite, although competition for space can be ferocious at times.

The first time I came across Phoebe New York was at Upfest 2016, but I have a feeling that she might not have travelled all the way over to Bristol but could have had an accomplice who pasted her pieces up…only a hunch. It matters not, I love her work to pieces.

1286. East Village, New York (2)

A second pair of magnificent Phoebe New York wheatpastes from my (not so) recent trip to the Big Apple last November. I have always loved her work ever since I first saw some paste ups in Bristol at Upfest 2016. Seeing them in her native New York is just that bit more thrilling.

The first of these is the largest wheatpaste of Phoebe’s that I have seen to date…pretty much life size and stands in a doorway on a side street. A glamorous look for our Phoebe, with the word ART pasted on in individual letters.

The second piece is one of Phoebe’s more normal miniature-sized pieces, with a vibrant yellow costume and striking hat; so very fashionable. This piece has the words ‘be confident’ emblazoned across it.

It would be fun to know whether Phoebe New York comes up with the phrase first and then creates the piece to reflect it, ot adds the phrase once the artwork is completed. Maybe it is a combination of the two. I enjoyed pointing out these wheatpastes when we were in New York to my daughter who shares the artist’s name.

1193. East Village, New York.

One of the things I was most hoping to see during my trip in October to New York was some wheatpastes by Phoebe New York, and I was not disappointed. There were plenty to find in the area around our hotel in Rivington Street.

I first came across her work at Upfest 2016, when I found two or three of her pasteups carefully placed in strategic positions along North Street. After that, I found some of her characters in London during my six month spell when I worked two days a week there. I have followed her on Instagram, and strongly recommend her original and quirky feed.

The two pieces shown here are the first of several that I found during our four-day excursion to the Big Apple. The first is on a plain white wall and picks out the little Phoebe perfectly – have a beautiful day.

The second pasteup is on an altogether different background with loads of flaking pieces of paper from previous wheatpastes and an interesting face for company. I love the placement of the piece, and especially love the dress. Perfect.

1111. Upfest 2017 (92)

Post 1111 – this would have David Shepherd hopping in his grave (an oblique reference to one of England’s finest cricket umpires). This small wheatpaste is a collaboration between d7606 and PDX artist Voxx Romana, Phoebe New York, and Twiglet boy, although I am baffled how such a small piece can be a collaboration between four artists. Maybe I have misunderstood D7606’s Instagram description of this piece.

So we have Albert Einstein wearing a colander on his head and a fine pair of spectacles with the face of somebody reflected in the lenses. I have no idea what this is all about, and I’m not too sure I want to know, but I do know that I like this eye-catching paste up.

 

 

342. Upfest 2016 (1)

What a busy couple of days it has been – a lot of walking and looking at hundreds of new pieces in South Bristol. Many of the works created are temporary and will be removed after the festival, some have been allocated prime sites and will remain for at least a year, others have been surreptitiously slapped up in interesting places and will have variable lifespans.

I will start my posts of Upfest with some wonderful pasteups by Phoebe New York (aka artist Libby Schoettle). I was especially pleased to see her work here in Bristol as I have only recently become aware of her and how brilliantly refreshing she is. A simple idea really well executed.

I particularly like the edge of her work, both in the content and statements, but also in the locations she chooses. I am a fan, and I expect there are more than just these two examples from Upfest in Bristol. I will be hunting for more.

Upfest is a truly spectacular festival and I feel honoured as an adopted Bristolian that people have come from all over the world to participate over the last two days. There is still one more day to go, but it is a working day and I suspect things will be a lot quieter. I have no idea how I am going to post all the amazinf things I have seen this weekend – I’ll just have to see how it goes.
