Enough already!

Winter’s tendrils holding fast,

bring me some sunshine.

Water vole

Dearest old Ratty

numbers are fast declining

from habitat loss.

‘Poop poop!’ said Toad seemingly

unaware of Ratty’s plight.

by Scooj

  • On the recent news that the water vole is Britain’s fastest declining mammal species mainly due to loss of suitable habitat and predation by mink. Thank heavens they are captured so beautifully in the form of Ratty in Kenneth Grahame’s ‘the Wind in the Willows’.

Edible crab (Cancer pagurus)

Piecrust carapace

and defensive demeanour;

unfortunately.

by Scooj

  • The edible or brown crab is the most important commercial crab species in Europe.

Hummingbird hawkmoth

Nectar specialist

with a convergent design

ultra-fast wingbeat.

  • Seen on the hill overlooking Barcelona.

Opah

Searching the oceans

vermillion, scimitar fins,

moonfish so striking.

Monk parakeet

Screeching green flashes

fly from palm top to palm top

busy nestbuilding.

by Scooj

  • A native of Argentina, this parakeet is quite at home in Barcelona which boasts the largest European population. Probably not entirely welcome, but suitably exotic.

Adam’s rainbow

It doesn’t matter

where in the world I see one,

I remember him.
