Over the past few months some rather nice script writing has appeared all over Bristol, with the words ‘Nice One’. I had nothing more to go on about the artist, until now, when a signed portrait by the artist appeared in Dean Lane recently. Unfortunately the identity of the artist remains a mystery, and until I know more I will refer to them as Nice One.

This is a fantastic portrait piece painted in a ‘brush-stroke’ style, as if it were a charcoal sketch in a black book. The proportions and perspectives are superb, the work of a trained artist I would guess. I love the expression on the character’s face. The bold ‘e’ in the signature is something I’ll be looking out for.  More to come from this Natural Adventures debutant soon.

1982. Stokes Croft, the Canteen

There is a new piece in town on one of the most famous walls in Bristol thanks to Banksy’s ‘Mild Mild West’ piece, which I am privileged to enjoy every time I walk to work. I had noticed a short while ago that the wall below had been prepped and there was a notice indicating that something new was going to be painted soon.

The piece in question is this ‘study’ by Soker (yes two Soker posts in a row), and when I first saw it I thought it was incomplete. I read subsequently that it is a piece designed to look like a sketch on lined paper with annotations. In meeting that brief, Soker has once again excelled and the piece will be keeping good company with the teddy bear above. Clever stuff.

1896. Franklyn Lane (1)

There is a reward for those who wander. I took a little walk in St Pauls a short while ago and went down a back street I’ve never been down before and there on an old derelict building I found this interesting piece on dit of board covering a door.

The drawn sketch, which I assume is by Aicha, is an unusual find and one that would more likely be found in a studio or gallery. It is also unusual because it has been drawn directly onto the surface, rather than on to a piece of paper and pasted up. I have not heard of Aicha before so can tell you nothing about the artist. I am guessing that I might have seen some tags from this artist before. A fine creative sketch and welcome contribution to the Bristol scene.
