7204. St Werburghs tunnel (527)

The return of Zinso to the streets of Bristol has been something of a revelation this summer, and his characters from a few years ago betrayed his talent as a graffiti writer. His style and use of bright colours has made a significant contribution to the scene this year and continues to do so.

This piece, in St Werburghs tunnel, is like sunshine in the sky with clouds. Whether that was a conscious colour palette decision or not I don’t know, but it works really well for me, especially in the gloom of the tunnel. The solid fills are nicely blended in horizontal stripes and there are some nice reversed-out patterns too, but generally it is not over-fussy. A blue shadow around the piece complements the letters and generally reflects the crisp and tidy feel to the whole piece. Nice work from Zinso.

  • That concludes my 30 Days Wild series of Haiku. I hope you enjoyed them.
  • 30 Days Wild is an initiative organised by the Wildlife Trusts. It is an annual challenge event, for those who choose to participate, to do one ‘wild’ thing a day throughout the month of June. I will try to write a nature haiku every day if I can, as my contribution to this celebration of wildlife and biodiversity. I did this back in 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

5959. Cumberland Basin

A piece by Nina Raines can only mean one thing, and that is a Bristol Mural Collective paint jam. There were several excellent pieces painted by artists of Bristol, unfortunately most unsigned, during the paint jam, and this one stood out. Nina Raines paints scenery for productions as a profession, and her skills have certainly come to the fore in this small piece.

One of the things I like about artists swapping a day in the studio for painting public walls is that they have a very different take from regular street/graffiti artists, not having any rules or conventions to follow, and often their work is incredibly creative. This piece is simple… a pair of arches, one with a cloudy scene and the other with something a little bit more cosmic, a nighttime sky, perhaps. I will try to post some other pieces from the paint jam, because the work of the Bristol Mural Collective definitely has loads of appeal.
