A little while ago, when I was in the vicinity of Temple Meads station with a little time to kill, I picked up a few pieces, including this one from RichT. I have no real way of knowing how long it has been there, but it is dated 2024. A little bit of research indicates that it was painted in September alongside a Sepr piece (to come).

The striking two-tone sketch piece has the words ‘Never better’ with the letters encapsulated in little circles. Lots of flowers, a bird and some faces make up the rest of the piece. It almost feels like a study, without any central theme, which is fine and it is really nice and crisp. Doing two-tone pieces like this demonstrates great artistry, because there is nowhere to hide both in terms of design and execution. This is a nice piece from RichT.

Tack Jucker has been a little bit quiet over the winter, so this early spring piece was a nice surprise. The piece resembles a study more than a complete piece, and perhaps gives us a little glimpse of the design ideas of Tack Jucker, and maybe something he is working on.

He has slapped this giant eye over the top of a Face 1st piece when perhaps the polite thing might have been to buff the wall out completely before starting. The eye itself is nicely done, and the reflections work really well – an aspiring My Dog Sighs perhaps?

Although Upfest was Highly populated with local artists this year, there were also at least twice as many who had travelled across Britain, Europe or the world to the city. Iain Macarthur is an illustrator from London whose work tends to focus around the deconstruction of faces/heads, of which this Upfest piece is a fine example.

This colourful piece explores what lies behind the face, and the answer here seems to be a tangled mass of blue and red organic tissue. Definitely an interesting study, and one that doesn’t present as gory or distasteful. A nice piece, well-designed for the tall, thin board.

1792. Upfest 2018 (68)

On the long car park wall of The Tobacco Factory one of the most eye-catching pieces is what I would describe as a still life study by the talented Envol. I first became aware of the artist at last year’s Upfest and his style is so very distinct.

There is something rather pleasing about this assemblage of recognisable things, the hand and the Swiss cheese plant leaf together with rather more abstract shapes. The painting draws the eye from one side to the other (in my case from left to right) before settling on the whole.

During the festival this area is a real squeeze, and it can be rather difficult stopping to take pictures without getting nudged in the back or caught up in the tide of human impatience sweeping towards the street food area. Last year’s piece is shown below.
