There is an artist in Bristol whose steady progress over the last year or two has elevated him to a high status, and deservedly so. Mind 49 has been painting from an early age, and his development has been a joy to witness, and now he is turning out outstanding pieces on a regular basis. He seems to have found his style and his work reflects a greater confidence.

This is one of a few recent pieces that showcase Mind 49’s portrait style, in which he practically always obscures part or most of the face either by its orientation or the use of clothing or accessories, like these sunglasses. Because of this his portraits feel more grounded, and less posed than some portrait pieces that we see. Brilliant zip by the way. This one is so much better in ‘the flesh’ because my photographs are a little washed out, which can happen on this wall in the afternoon/early evening light. Keep watching this space for a whole lot more from Mind 49.

Laic217 has awoken from a little bit of a winter slumber, and what a joy it is to see his work appearing on the streets again. I must have found this one pretty quickly after he had painted it, because I hadn’t seen it on any social media when I stumbled across it.

This piece demonstrates the impact of colours against greyscale. We see one of Laic217’s skeleton characters complete with textured clothes, a neck chain and baseball cap all painted in black, greys and white. The portrait piece is brought alive with the addition of rainbow colours on the character’s lightweight sunglasses, changing the whole dynamic of the piece – imagine how it would look without the splash of colour. Clever work from Laic217.

3893. Castle Hill Liskeard

I spend a fair bit of my spare time immersed in the world of street art and graffiti art and even when I am on holiday, the antennae are out and working overtime. On a recent family holiday to Cornwall, we had opted for an Indian takeaway one evening, rather than cook (in holiday mode). Before I picked up the food, I thought I’d do a quick Google Maps search of the streets in Liskeard to get my bearings. As luck would have it, the building opposite the takeaway had several rather nice pieces painted on it (not a common sight anywhere in Cornwall), all of them by an artist called Stuart H Taylor.

This stunning piece was one of the murals, with more to come soon, and rather blew my socks off. I think that his work is brush painted rather than using spray cans, but Stuart H Taylor has created a very clever stencil effect using shades and tones that make this really stand out. The reflected scene in the sunglasses is not a new idea, but has been very well executed and one is left pondering what is going on. What a bonus to find this piece and more on holiday, feeding my habit.
