This piece by RichT completely passed me by. I have no idea whether is is old or new. It is a lesson in looking backwards because I walk past this wall from time to time, but cannot see the face of it when walking from the direction I come from. I think it was the dog that stopped after I had gone past and I caught the piece in my peripheral vision, and of course made a bee line over to it.

The piece is typically busy and interesting and beautifully presented. The piece is also brilliantly on-topic, with a can of paint character (not a spray can on this occasion) painting a floral design with a paintbrush. The colours are incredibly subtle and the piece has a black and white tinted effect. Some clever work picking out the mortar lines in the brickwork emphasises the sense of place. A great piece, a commission I imagine, and a nice tribute to Elliot.

Werm, The Paintworks, Bristol, October 2023
Werm, The Paintworks, Bristol, October 2023

This wall is a little out of the way and not favoured by many artists in Bristol. It is however a favourite for the Bristol Mural Collective to host occasional paint jams, so I was a little surprised to find a couple of Werm pieces on this stretch, which may have been there for some time, as I don’t visit the spot all that often.

This striking piece by Werm exploits the contrasting nature of Pink and Black, a combination used to great effect by Lee Roy and Waste in Brunel Way a little while back. Judging from the letter shapes, I would say that this piece is relatively recent, and it is dated 2023. I think I prefer his work when it is slightly less busy and cluttered, so I am enjoying this new direction.

Catching a glimpse of this piece across a building site took me straight back to my childhood and my favourite children’s picture books authored and illustrated by Richard Scarry. Particular favourite books were ‘Busy Busy World’ and ‘What do People do all Day’, the latter even made an appearance in a TV commercial with me and my sister, but that is a whole other story.

I have no idea when Haka painted this wonderful piece of Lowly Worm driving in his apple car, and I have probably only just noticed it because of the building site possibly exposing the wall. Haka certainly has a knack of escalating levels of nostalgia with his picture book character series of pieces, but this one absolutely is my favourite so far. I now feel like I need to find a copy of one of Richard Scarry’s books, just for old times’ sake. Perfection.

I have not posted many pieces from The Paintworks wall, which is a bit of a shame really, so I will try to change that if I can. This is a very nice abstract piece from Billy, full of colour and character, as you would expect from the artist. The wall is a little bit grubby, which suggests that the piece has been here for some while.

Billy always manages to create uplifting work, and the combinations of shapes and colours carefully slung together in this piece work well for me. The other thing I like about this piece is that it is nicely framed with a black border that helps us to focus on the art within it.

Merny is an artist who portrays moments of everyday life in a way that turns the mundane and ordinary into the extraordinary. It reminds me of the Aardman electricity adverts, called Creature Comforts, from a few years ago, where sound recordings of rather boring conversations were brought to life by illustrating them with animals using stop-frame model animation (from the Wallace and Gromit team). Merny’s work is the static version of this creative approach.

This piece was created earlier this year, but having only recently found this spot, it is all new to me. ‘Relax Tony, I am elite reiki healer pls’ – this is so funny, and perfectly accompanied by two characters acting out the scene, incorporating the bullet labels that we see on Merny’s work. Another fabulous story piece in Merny’s inimitable style.

At last (thank you Paul) I have located The Paintworks wall, one which has been used a couple of times for the Bristol Womxn Mural Collective. This magnificent beetle painted by Nina Raines which dates back to September 2021 was a piece from a BWMC paint jam.

Nina Raines is a fabulous artist, who doesn’t paint with a particular style or subject, but is incredibly adaptive. I would struggle to identify her work if it was unsigned. The beetle is so beautiful and Nina Raines has managed to capture the iridescence of the carapace perfectly. Look out for more pieces from this wall.
