Doors 353 – Doors of Shrewsbury (part IV) – April 2025

This week I bring you an assortment of doors from Shrewsbury, some of them domestic and some commercial. All of them a bit quirky or old. I hope you enjoy them:

I can’t even guess what is going on with the brick work over the middle door – I’m not sure that building regulations would let you get away with something like that these days. Maybe there was never a door there originally, but two windows side by side, and a door was recessed into where the right-hand window had been?

It is great to see some painted utility boxes from Shrewsbury… I’ll see if I can dig them out as a special from the town.

That’s it for another week. Lots more to come next time. Until then have a great end of week and weekend.

Thursday Doors – 30 April 2026

Doors 352 – Doors of Shrewsbury (part III) – April 2025

Well I completely fluffed it last week. I have been so busy at work, with both Wednesday and Thursday last week out of the office, that I quite ran out of time to post Thursday Doors. I guess it happens from time to time, but at least I am trying to get ahead of the game this week – I prepared some of this post last night!

The is not too much to say about this selection from Shrewsbury other than that they are a mixture of town house doors and timber-framed shopfronts. I hope you enjoy them:

A note taken from the Original Shrewsbury website about the last building featured is as follows:

Costa Coffee is one of Shrewsbury High Street’s many classic timber framed Tudor buildings. But if you look closely, you may realise that not all is as it seems! During restoration works in the 1990s, the upper carvings were given a colourful update with the addition of the heads of Margaret Thatcher and Michael Heseltine back to back, as they apparently were in political terms, the words ‘Poll Tax’ are behind them. The carvings along Grope Lane include grapes and motorcycles.

More to come from this remarkable market town next time. Until then may I wish you a fabulous weekend.

Thursday doors – 5 March 2026 – York City

Doors 345 – Doors from the City of York, (Part VI), June 2024

This week I am sharing the penultimate set of doors in this series from the City of York. I was only there for one night, arriving late afternoon on one day, and in a meeting for the next before returning home to Bristol. All of these doors were photographed during a short window of time in the evening and early morning of the two days.

While I enjoy the ‘on tour’ days of my job, I only ever really get a superficial glimpse of the places I go to, but mark them up for potential fuller visits in my retirement. Photographing the doors offers me a tantalising taster, which I hope comes across in these Thursday Doors posts. I hope you enjoy this week’s selection:

Built in 1465 beside York Minster, St William’s College originally housed the Minster’s chantry priests, who were paid to pray for the souls of benefactors, and was named after Archbishop William Fitzherbert. After centuries of changing uses, from private flats and a Civil War printing press to near-derelict slum housing, the Grade I listed medieval building was restored and today is used as a historic venue for events, dining, and public visits.

Thursday doors – 5 February 2026 – City of York

Doors 341 – Doors from the City of York (Part II), June 2024

Having spent a week away on a glorious holiday, I am now paying the price, with an avalanche of emails and backlog of work projects and requests keeping me very busy indeed. This afternoon I head off to Cornwall to run a workshop on Friday, leaving me little time to work and prepare blog posts, so I wrote this one last night.

Back to some doors from the City of York, which is a truly incredible place if ever you get the chance to visit, but I would advise going during the spring or autumn, because it can get very crowded indeed in peak tourist season.

This set of doors were photographed during a random walk between the hotel I was staying at and the government office where I was having a team meeting. I hope you enjoy them.

Thursday doors – 31 July 2025 – Doors of Godalming

Doors 318 – Doors of Godalming, Surrey, March 2025 (Part IV)

Rather remarkably, I have remembered that Dan is taking a Thursday Doors holiday this week, but I have decided to press ahead with this week’s selection as I have a little bit of time (last night in fact) to write this post and I might as well make hay while the sun shines.

This is the fourth and penultimate selection of doors from Godalming in Surrey, photographed on a work trip overnight stay. This week’s doors are mostly from the High Street running through the centre of the town. Enjoy.

Godalming High Street, like so many other high streets in English towns, is stuffed full of little gems and wonderful history, heritage and architecture. It is all too easy to keep your head down and not look at what is around you. Having an interest in doors acts like a portal (no pun intended) into this world of curiosity of your surroundings, and it has certainly prompted me to look at the places where I happen to be through a different lens. One more selection and then I move on to another place. See you next time.

Thursday Doors

Thursday Doors – 12 June 2025 – Doors of Leicester

Doors 311 – Leicester, Leicestershire (part I) – May 2024

One of the main reasons that I am enjoying my work so much at the moment is that I get to travel around the country helping teams and partnerships declare new National Nature Reserves. These NNRs are the lesser-know sibling of National Parks and National Landscapes (formerly Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs)). There are about 220 NNRs in England, and they are the country’s best places for nature.

There is a Government target to create 25 new significant NNRs over a five-year period, and we are in the second year of rolling this out. In May 2024, a new National Nature Reserve was declared called Bradgate Park, which is a ten-minute drive outside Leicester. I was lucky enough to be there at the launch event and stayed the night before in Leicester – naturally it was an opportunity to photograph some doors. This is the first selection of doors from that visit:

Thursday Doors

Thursday doors – 12 December 2024 – Exeter doors

Doors 289 – Doors from Exeter, Devon, October 2023 – Part VII

Thank you for your patience. Today I complete what has been a marathon sequence of posts of doors photographed during a two-hour doorscursion in Exeter in October 2023. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing these doors, but am also looking forward to moving on to some other themes and places in the new year.

There are quite a lot of doors in this last selection, which rounds off the walk and picks up a few odds and ends too. Let’s get cracking:

Well, that really is it from Exeter for the time being, unless I go back for another doorscursion. Next time I think the idea is to post favourites from the last 12 months, which could be a little challenging. Have a great weekend.

Doors 288 – Doors from Exeter, Devon – Part V, October 2023

At the time of publishing this post, I will be in a conference in Bristol, So I had to cobble this post together in a bit of a hurry last night. There is not too much to say about this week’s selection of doors, because it forms part of a long series of doors from the City of Exeter, all photographed during a two-hour walk back in October 2023. These doors were all from the area around Exeter Cathedral. I hope you enjoy them.

Doors 283 – Doors from Exeter, Devon – Part I, October 2023

Regulars may have picked up that I am currently on my annual fishing trip in with a great friend, Andy. We have been doing this since 1986 or so, and only missed two years. Once I was away in the Falkland Islands and the other was Covid lockdowns. Although this year’s trip has been delayed, we are here now.

On the way home from last year’s trip we stopped off in Exeter, because Andy’s daughter is a student there and her digs needed a bit of pest control. While Andy spent a couple of hours with his daughter I went for a stroll around the city and these are some of the doors I photographed. I hope you enjoy them:

Doors 227 – Doors of York City (part 3)

A quick one today as returning from a holiday always seems to lead into an extremely busy work week. This mortal coil!

This is the third and final instalment of doors from York, and a not-so-recent trip there about a month ago. I think that I could have spent a lot more time there enjoying the history of the place, and I would have liked to have had time to visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, but alas I had to dash off to a conference. This set of photographs aren’t up to my usual standard – I think that I was rushing to get the pictures while the light was fading and didn’t do a very good job of it. I hope you enjoy this final set from York, before I move on to doors of Lincoln and a real door treat in store.
