Regular readers will know that I don’t like to post work by artists unknown to me, and I will often hold photographs of pieces back until I know who they are by. In some instances, particularly when I don’t think I will ever find out, I relent and post the piece anyway. This beautiful horse is one such example.

I don’t often see horses painted in Bristol, there is not much crossover between equestrians and street artists. This is a nicely painted two-tone piece in which the horse appears to be almost ghost-like, or in the form of a ‘patronus’ (for Harry Potter fans). The words ‘Lotty is horsey’ might give some clues about the originator, but I am left none the wiser. The piece was too good and unusual not to post.

A little while ago, when I was in the vicinity of Temple Meads station with a little time to kill, I picked up a few pieces, including this one from RichT. I have no real way of knowing how long it has been there, but it is dated 2024. A little bit of research indicates that it was painted in September alongside a Sepr piece (to come).

The striking two-tone sketch piece has the words ‘Never better’ with the letters encapsulated in little circles. Lots of flowers, a bird and some faces make up the rest of the piece. It almost feels like a study, without any central theme, which is fine and it is really nice and crisp. Doing two-tone pieces like this demonstrates great artistry, because there is nowhere to hide both in terms of design and execution. This is a nice piece from RichT.

Although Bogat doesn’t paint as frequently as I might like, he does just enough to keep the interest out there, and I am sure that he probably intends to paint more than he does, but as it is for all of us, other stuff gets in the way. This one was painted last month on the wall behind the Black Swan.

Bogat has created a colourful cartoon character using the two-tone light and dark technique for his base colours. Many artists use this method and probably the best example of this is Bean, who uses it to great effect. I particularly like the eyes of this character, which look like they have flat reflections, almost as if they were glasses. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for more from Bogat.

The wonderful thing about art is that you can create situations or landscapes or portraits and so on that are utterly fictional, unlikely, impossible, weird and that you are in control of this creative universe. Alternatively, some artists try to capture real life either through accurate representations or abstract interpretations. Bean has painted something verging on the weird side with this piece.

The character, who is wearing a rather curious hat, is holding his, or somebody else’s severed legs from which blue gloop is gushing. I’ll not attempt to interpret the piece, which is exceptionally painted in Bean’s trademark two-tone colour cartoon style. An entertaining and curious piece.

2689. Park Street Avenue

Well, I never did get a clean shot of this great two-tone piece by RichT and now of course it has gone forever, so this is the best I have. RichT has quite an unusual style in which he tends to fill the ‘canvass’ from top to bottom with decoration and detail, there are no ‘white spaces’ in his work – busy and interesting.

This piece was painted on a hoarding half way up Park Street on a building that seems to have been going through a renovation for a very long time. The work has been there for most of it, but wheely bins and scaffolding have been at the scourge of decent street photography. I still felt the piece was worth posting though as I do rather like RichT’s work.

2214. Hepburn Road (9)

In a small alley off Stokes Croft called Hepburn Road (former drug dealing centre of Bristol) is (was) this intriguing piece by Nightways who seems to have cast off the winter doldrums and has become very active in recent weeks.

Unfortunately this two-tone piece was bombed fairly quickly, so I was lucky to get a clean picture of it. The painting is of a woman holding a strand of her hair from which a tiny little monkey is dangling, thus ensuring that there is some ‘monkeyness’ in the piece, which is what we have come to expect from Nightways. I met him last weekend, painting with Laic217 in Moon Street, and there is another of his pieces that I can’t wait to share with you. Nice work.
