The Lucky Lane Bristol Mural Collective paint jam last month, is a gift that keeps on giving. Although I missed the pieces being painted because I was out of the country, I have been able to enjoy them completely and utterly. This is a wonderful shutter piece by Yoliws.

I love Yoliws’ characters that have a sense of freedom and joy about them, and the colours she selects have an upbeat feel. Unfortunately, I think that the shutter is working against Yoliws in this instance, and perhaps some stronger colours might have brought out a bit more contrast. There is a lovely message here for all who care to look at it… ‘Feelin’ lucky to have met you’. Fabulous stuff.

This is another Bristol mural collective piece painted at Bristol’s smallest street art festival at the end of July. The artist Yoliws, is no stranger to the pages of Natural Adventures, and all of her pieces have an uplifting and fun quality to them.

This light-hearted mural features some green flowers with characters frolicking among them. Everybody appears to be having fun, and there is a playful innocence about the whole scene. The piece is enjoyable and wholesome, perfect for the spot, alongside so many other wonderful murals.

At the moment, North Street is awash with new pieces that have been painted for Upfest, Europe’s largest street art festival, which continues until the end of this week. This piece, however, by Yoliws above the Café ‘Nook’ has been here for a little while and should not be confused with an Upfest piece.

Yoliws is a regular participant in the Bristol Mural Collective paint jams, but this is the first time I have seen a full-scale commission from her. The piece really sets a tone of relaxed café culture, and her white scribbly characters set on a black background tell a calm and comfortable story of what occurs within. Her highly designed style really lends itself to this kind of shopfront commission, and I am sure that there will be more to come. Great fun, well executed.

4072. Dean Lane skate park (439)

A week ago, the Bristol Womxn Mural Collective got really busy down in Dean Lane, and there was barely a wall untouched by their work. The BWMC has become a powerful group bringing women into the street art scene in a safe and supportive environment. We, the citizens, are the beneficiaries of this movement.

Some of the work contains political or social comment such as this lovely piece by Yoliws. Her assertion ‘everyone deserves to walk the streets in peace’ is absolutely bang on, and is a commendable theme. To the left are some typical inappropriate and utterly unwelcome phrases, sadly still too often heard. Yoliws has illustrated the piece with one of her fabulous characters standing up to the comments. Enough is enough!

I love this piece on so many levels.

3819. Cumberland Basin

One of many great things about summer is that is gets people outdoors more often and in particular, artists who might be more familiar with their studios get a chance to express themselves by painting a few walls. This piece by Yoliws was created during a paint jam organised by the Bristol Womxn Mural Collective a few weeks back.

Although Yoliws doesn’t paint walls too often, her style is highly memorable and always rather fun and joyful. The figures she paints are wobbly and stylised, the sorts of things that would work really well on cards or illustrating the pages of children’s books. Simple and beautiful.

3814. Muriel Alleyway (5)

Hurrah! For Yoliws ( Yoli Ward-Streeter) a Bristol artist and member of the fabulous Bristol Womxn Mural Collective, hurrah! I say again for this delightful mural in one of Bristol’s less visited street art spots. This mural is bright and full of joy.

I managed to take these pictures on a bright day and without the trees casting a shadow, which is something of a feat in this particular spot. The character has been painted with Yoliws’ characteristic wobbly lines and the orange body filled with beautiful stars and squiggles. The piece has loads of movement to it and an underlying happiness, which is so great to see. A truly uplifting mural.

2674. M32 roundabout J3 (188)

There is something rather thrilling about coming across a new piece from a new artist and this is the perfect example. The wonderful bold wobbly woman, painted with a creative confidence that I just love is by Yoli Ward-Streeter (Yoliws) who is one third of an all female creative community in Bristol called glu (art).

It is high-time that we had an injection of new street art in Bristol and especially from female painters, you can never have enough. The thing I love most about this piece is the sense of freedom and fun that it exudes, there is nothing pretentious or arrogant about it and the naive style, simple outline and solid fill added together create something really rather different and special.

I look forward to seeing more from Yoli and her partners at Glu and am already aware of some small pieces down at Cumberland Basin that have been painted by this collective. All good.
