Doors 76 – Dorchester doors (1)

I went to a meeting in Dorchester last week and had quite a lot of time to kill either side of the meeting and my train journeys. I have never been to the town before, so there was an obvious doorscursion opportunity, and what an appropriately named place for such a thing.

The town left me a little puzzled. Compared to Bristol it is a rather sleepy and sedate place although both share an extraordinary history and abominable post-war architecture. The most striking thing was the abundance of retirees as a proportion of the total population. Maybe this was an artifact of the time of day I was visiting, I don’t know.

Because of its Roman heritage I had imagined ancient doors all over the place, but instead there was a curious mix of old, new, weird and beautiful doors. You’ll be glad to hear there were no graffiti doors in Dorchester.

  4. Awesome doors in Dorchester…that rolls off the tongue nicely 😀
    I love the classic simple lines of the second one, and then there are those blue ones, such a rich deep blue: very nice indeed.

  5. I’d be in terrible straits if I had to place Dorchester on the map. First I’d look near Boston, USA. Isn’t there one too? UK then. Dorset, you say? Dorchester and Dorset, two names with a door sound in them. Isn’t that on the coast? Anyway, I like your selection.

    1. Dorchester is a sleepy county on the South coast of Old Blighty west of Hampshire South of Somerset and Wiltshire and East of Devon. Other towns include Poole, Bournemouth and Weymouth.

      1. Thank you! I was in Southampton, and then we proceeded to a Cove called… hm.. Lulworth Cove! That’s about it… Oh, we did the Monkey World too. And Stonehenge. That and London, and that’s it for me as far as Great Britain is concerned, I’m afraid.
