Doors 231 – Lincoln City doors (Part IV) – Lincoln Cathedral
On my work visit to Lincoln a few weeks back, I was running a workshop on the Monday, so I planned my arrival to give myself time to explore on the Sunday afternoon. I had no idea what to expect, having never visited before, and I can’t even remember ever having conversations with anyone bout the city. This was a blank canvas, perfect for a spot of psychogeography.
This week, the doors come from Lincoln Cathedral, at the top of the hill in the old city. I think that it is safe to say that I was utterly awestruck and moved by the architecture and aura of the cathedral, and I believe it to be one of the finest buildings I have seen in England. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to enter the cathedral, because it was a Sunday evening and people were heading in for a service, it wasn’t really appropriate to be a tourist at that moment, I might have to return sometime. Here are some doors from the outside of this magnificent building, which I hope you enjoy as much as I did:

I have more doors to share with you from the old part of Lincoln city next time. I hope you have a good weekend, and I look forward to reading about your doors today.
If you have made it this far, you probably like doors, and you really ought to take a look at the No Facilities blog by Dan Anton who has taken over the hosting of Thursday Doors from Norm 2.0 blog. Links to more doorscursions can be found in the comments section of Dan Anton’s Thursday Doors post.

I think the last one is more Romanesque – a classic Norman arch job.

That’s what I thought, but I read something that mentioned Gothic. I think you are right though.

Stunning photos and wonderful doors. The cathedral is magnificent, Steve. It looks like you could explore it for hours on end. I hope you make it back and can get a look inside at some point.

I love visiting cathedrals, Stephen. The Lincoln Cathedral is absolutely magnificent. The entrances and doors on all sides are equally gorgeous. The south side must be the main entrance. I imagine the inside is as reverence as the outside. Hope you’ll tour the inside someday.

Me too, although it is a bit of a trek from my home city of Bristol.

You live in a beautiful city, Stephen. When we went to London, my childhood friend and her husband took us to Stonehenge and Bath. It was late in the day at Bath and raining. We didn’t visit the Roman Baths. We should go back.

Although neighbours, Bristol and Bath are quite distinct in architecture and culture. I would say that Bristol is more ‘rough and ready’ and cosmopolitan. Bath is more of a visitor attraction and much smaller it also survived the war largely intact, unlike the centre of Bristol which was ripped out during the blitz.

One building – so many doors. Wonder how one would provide security?

And also, where do some of the smaller doors lead to?

Fantastic place. Impeccable Thursday Doors.
What is it with the small, side doors that attract us so much? Whimsy!

Curiosity… where do those small doors go, and who uses(d) them?
