6050. St Augustine’s Parade (3)

At my work, there is quite a strong push to bring people back into the office, after an extended period of being enforced, then encouraged, then allowed to work from home. It seems that the Government direction (driven by Rishi Sunak’s conviction that we aren’t buying enough sandwiches in Pret a Manger, leading to the collapse of urban economies) is to get folk back into those empty buildings. My personal view is mixed. It seems mad that loads of office buildings are empty, but it also feels that we work in a new era, where for many office jobs, we are set up to work from home. I expect that this is a debate that will run and run, and then be overtaken by AI replacing our jobs in any case.

I mention all of this because I am now starting to return to the office, which gives me a chance to explore and seek out street/graffiti art on my walks to and from work, which are not on my more usual ’rounds’. I saw, for the first time walking to work recently, this commission piece by Mr Penfold in St Augustine’s Parade. It is a wonderful piece of corporate design, but so distinctively Mr Penfold, who has managed to blend his design work with his street art passion – great work if you can get it.

5826. Purdown (66)

Acer One, Purdown, Bristol, January 2024
Acer One, Purdown, Bristol, January 2024

Acer One struck gold with this concept of building a geometric design around an impossible triangle, and this is a sister piece to one he painted about a month or so back. The piece plays tricks with the eyes, because everything inside the concentric hexagonal stripes is three dimensional , which makes the centrepiece stand out from the wall.

There is a lot of skill to designing and painting geometric pieces like this and there is absolutely no room for error. Unfortunately there were some people sitting on top of the concrete block, and so I have tried to crop them out of the photographs, which is a pity, because it would have been nice to get a shot from a little more distance. These studies by Acer One are a rather fine direction of travel in my view.

I’m not sure that I have seen any work by Acer One at the Purdown spot before, but with this piece I think he has earned the freedom of the City (metaphorically speaking at least). An utterly mesmerising piece with a pink triangle interlocking with a white cube with hexagonal holes – a masterpiece of geometric design.

The pink works so well against the black and white hexagons in this piece, and the whole thing is a beacon of classy artwork on the top of a bleak hill. This looks like a bit of a new direction for Acer One, and another new piece (to follow I hope) has some similar design ideas. 2024 could be an exciting year for the artist.

5677. Leonard Lane (42)

Peggy, Leonard Lane, Bristol, November 2023

Over the last year or so, we have become used to seeing Peggy’s wonderful floral works, starting with a few modest pieces in Dean Lane, to now, and some large, complex and bold pieces. I love watching street artists grow in confidence and ambition, and Peggy is establishing herself, while sticking to her essential floral designs.

Leonard Lane is a bit of a ‘go to’ destination at the moment and is as colourful and vibrant as I have ever seen it. This piece bursts with energy and colour, lighting up the rather dimly lit alleyway. Lots of designed curls in pink, orange and yellow surround a central eye, in this piece that definitely grabs the attention. Great work from Peggy.

5676. M32 roundabout J3 (531)

Slakarts, M32 roundabout, Bristol, November 2023
Slakarts, M32 roundabout, Bristol, November 2023

A year or two ago, Slakarts was one of the more prolific artists in Bristol. I have a feeling that he is busy with work these days, which is, of course,  good thing, but it means we get to see fewer pieces on the streets. These days, every piece is a very welcome surprise, like this one on the M32 roundabout.

Slakarts has developed his style considerably, developing his trademark faces into something altogether more sophisticated. This sophisticated abstract piece incorporates his face design into a busy mash up of facial features, letters and symbols to create a bright and exciting experience. I would love to see more of his work, but have to be grateful for small mercies.

Inkie, Cheltenham Paint Festival, Cheltenham, July 2023
Inkie, Cheltenham Paint Festival, Cheltenham, July 2023

You can be pretty certain that Inkie will have a presence at the Cheltenham Paint Festival, which is great. What is even better is that although this piece was from the 2022 Festival, I managed to find it this time round… only a year late, but better than nothing I suppose.

The character/writing combination is along the lines that you would expect to see. A beautiful girl with long flowing hair alongside some large block writing. I am not too sure what the ‘St Pauls’ refers to. There is a St Paul’s church very near where this was painted, but it could I suppose be a reference to Bristol’s St Paul’s district. Unmistakably Inkie, the piece is still looking fresh as a daisy. Nice Tribute to Julian too.

A brief one this morning, there is just too much beauty and history around me. I sit in an ancient medieval library, part of a monastery that has been converted into a holiday let in Umbria. It is difficult not to become entirely enveloped in the culture of the place. Also I need breakfast, I am hungry. This piece is something rather different, and a first on Natural Adventures from Dai_luk_tattoo.

I can’t tell you much about the artist, but this is a beautifully designed work of a woman arched backwards in a graceful pose and with plentiful hair. I am not sure what the orange shapes by her feet are, but they look like teeth. Surely not. Based on this I would dearly love to see more street art from this tattooist.

Daz Cat, M32 roundabout, Bristol, June 2023
Daz Cat, M32 roundabout, Bristol, June 2023

When I first encountered Daz Cat’s pieces, they were pretty much always portraits of cats, sometimes dogs, and reasonably basic, but with that Daz Cat style. Over time his work has become more sophisticated, and about 18 months ago reached a new level, each piece telling stories, rather than just a portrait.

This one on the St Werburghs entrance to the roundabout, is a piece that uses the square space supremely well, and the illustrative rabbit (or cat with very long ears) curled up in a tight ball appears to be spinning. There is lots of movement here and even though it is painted in greyscale, it makes a strong impression. Who’d have thought he’d be producing stuff like this a few years ago. Great to see.

Rob Wheeler, Upfest 22, Bristol, May 2022
Rob Wheeler, Upfest 22, Bristol, May 2022

I have only once before seen the work of Rob Wheeler, I think, and that is on one of the commissioned columns under the railway on Stapleton Road, and his style is so distinctive, drawing on the William Morris style of large floral decorations, almost looking like a sumptuous 1970s wallpaper design.

Rob Wheeler, Upfest 22, Bristol, May 2022

The design is tight, the lines sharp and fills solid, and from a technical point of view this piece is near perfect. This floral treat was a highlight of the festival, although to be fair, there were so many highlights.

Wee Nuls, Upfest 22, Bristol, Upfest 2022
Wee Nuls, Upfest 22, Bristol, Upfest 2022

Another visiting artist to Upfest 22 was Wee Nuls from Belfast, although she has visited Bristol at least once before, and left a rather nice piece underneath the M32, if my memory serves me correctly. I’ll try to dig it out and add it to the end of this post.

This is a rather delightful, demonic piece from Wee Nuls, that comes across as a highly designed and polished work. It is the kind of thing you might expect to see in a gallery or as a framed contemporary picture, but here it is as a piece of street art, wonderful.

The piece is really nicely finished and sharp, using up the space on the square board really well, giving a polished and professional appearance. Great work from Wee Nuls.
