Simply stunning! This is a magnificent piece of graffiti writing from Dott Rotten, notable as much for its fabulous and striking colours as it is for the fabulous design and technical excellence.

I had a great chat with Dott Rotten last week, not far from here, and he told me that it hasn’t always been easy and that at one point he had considered giving up on graffiti writing altogether. Thank goodness he thought better of it as he is turning out some of the best work in Bristol at the moment. This is an instant classic in my eyes and yet another fine piece of work on this subterranean wall.

Dott Rotten has been spoiling us with his SPOILT pieces of late, and this red and green beauty on the M32 roundabout is an absolute classic. Dott Rotten’s writing style is fairly recognisable, although when he writes other letters it can take me a while to pin him down. However, it is not so much the style that gives him away as the quality of his finishing.

In that respect, there are some similarities with Rusk’s work which is always so neat and tidy. These joined up letters are brought to life with a light and dark shade of fill with some repeating patterns of dots and boxy segments. What makes it jump out though is the wonderful contrast with the vibrant red backdrop. A lovely piece.

3435. Dean Lane skate park (382)

Another artist having a bit of a spree at the moment is Dott Rotten, whose work is in the top division. Take a look at this piece of graffiti writing from a week or two back and tell me that it isn’t out of the top drawer. This is an artist who is at the top of his game and seems to be enjoying it.

The writing with his familiar SPOILT letters is nicely worked with two shades of blue, perfect orange outlines and some superb trademark bubbles. The whole piece is lifted up with a deep red 3D shading. This is great graffiti writing.

3409. M32 roundabout J3 (272)

I’ve had this Dott Rotten SPOILT piece in my queue for a little while, mainly because I thought I’d already posted it… turns out I hadn’t. It is yet another demonstration of this artist’s graffiti writing skills. I’d like to make comparisons with other artists in Bristol, but I have decided not to simply because we are so very fortunate in having so many outstandingly talented graffiti writers in our city. There surely cannot be another city in the world with such a collection of top drawer writers… suggestions please…

In this piece Dott Rotten spells out SPOILT in fabulous letter shapes with his trademark spots adding interest to the fills. The piece is complex, with joins overlapping one another… I don’t quite know how he keeps on top of it, and the subtle shadows add to the overall 3D effect. The piece doesn’t stop at the red boundary, but is set on cosmic cloudy background. Brilliant.

3361. Sparke Evans park (4)

On the long wall at Sparke Evans park is this lovely chrome and black piece from Dott Rotten who more often than not spells out SPOILT in his pieces. I don’t know how long the piece has been there, because I visit so infrequently, but it looks reasonably fresh and untagged, so I don’t think it is too old.

I think that Dott Rotten is an artist whose work we just don’t get to see enough of. These letters are perfectly formed and the black 3D shadows exact. To cap it off, the black decorative fills around the outside, and variants in the ‘O’ add depth. As fine a piece of two-tone graffiti writing that you will see.

3309. St John’s Steep (1)

There is no real surprise in finding a piece by Dott Rotten in this part of town as he happens to work not a stone’s throw away from this hoarding. I don’t see too many pieces from Dott Rotten, so it is always a pleasant surprise to find one of his SPOILT writings on my walks.

This particular piece of graffiti writing is fresh on a new hoarding which is great, because hoardings like this in a central city location can become very untidy very quickly. Set on an orange wash, the letters SPOILT are nicely picked out and filled with a light blue colour and decorated with grey, blue and red spots. This is a classy piece of writing which I suspect was painted fairy swiftly (the fills are not quite as solid as they might be).

2913. M32 cycle path (58)

This is a gorgeous piece of block lettering on the M32 cycle path from Dott Rotten. I took the photograph on 30 March 2019, and the photo label is ‘Brexit Day’. How my heart still bleeds about the unbelievably bad decision our country has taken, now amplified by the need to work together following the coronavirus outbreak. I suspect our folly (or otherwise) will be scrutinised by our grandchildren, by which time we might have recovered from the economic shock.

Meanwhile, this beautiful piece is expertly sprayed and demonstrates the crossover between graphic design and spray painting. Dott Rotten has used the brick lines to get the proportions of his letters correct, but this piece excels in its 3D letter depth off to the bottom right and the block letter shadow off to the bottom left. Take a good long look to see how this works. A nice clean piece and something a little different.
