3926. Upfest 2021 75×75 (57)

For a large wall, this one gets fairly frequent facelifts, usually, but not always, linked to Upfest. This time for 75 walls in 75 days, it is the turn of Philth and N4T4, and they have created something rather special.

The two artists are no strangers to collaborating with one another, and indeed my first introduction to their talents was at an Upfest festival a few years back. In this mural, their work integrates really well, assisted by the colour palette both artists are using.

The portrait is by N4T4 and is typical of his work, where the face is composed of a whole load of tiny detailed patterns, in this case floral patterns. It is so clever the way he does this. Not so clever is the terrible photograph. I’ll have to go and take another one.

The extraordinary floral backdrop is by Philth and is surely inspired by William Morris wallpaper designs. Rich and sumptuous, the poppy heads, sunflowers, foxgloves and daisies make for a stunning piece, and it is amazing how powerful the whole effect is, being created with so few colours.

For good measure, topping the mural there is a butterfly which I think is by N4T4. The wing spots give this away as being a peacock butterfly, which again is superbly created using a limited colour palette. This is a joyful and uplifting collaboration that greets motorists on one of the busier roads in Bedminster and thoroughly deserving of its place on this premium wall.

1778. The Bearpit (163)

Things have really slowed down at The Bearpit recently and most of the walls are becoming congested with fly posters and tagging. It has got a whole lot worse and more trashy since Bristol City Council came down hard on the street art scene and buffed all the walls – unintended consequences and all that…

In among all the sleezyness is this really classy piece recently sprayed by DNT. It is a floral tribute piece to a friend of his, Derek Williams, who passed away, I guess recently. In a touching Instagram post he says that Derek was one of the first people he met when he arrived in Bristol in 1990 and treated him normally. There is a big back-story there of which we only get a glimpse.

As tributes go, this is a really heartfelt and carefully crafted piece and from the Autumn colours to the whole tone of the piece you can see it is a labour of love. Lovely tribute.

1562. North Street Green (11)

This utterly magnificent piece is by Philth who is the Upfest featured artist for June and who has made this Upfest curated wall his own for the month. Some of you may remember his Upfest 2017 piece which he painted with N4T4 in the rain, both artists sporting umbrellas while at work.

Since Upfest, Philth has gone on a binge of producing the most beautiful floral prints, which transport me back to my home in the 1970s and my mother’s love for floral wallpaper. She had good taste and would surely love this wall by Philth.

This work really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, it is so different, and it is great to see floral print on this kind of scale. I can’t wait to see what he treats us to for Upfest 2018 (only a month away…can it be true?

966. Upfest (26)

This site on North Street has played host to some great street artists in recent years, including N4T4, Phil Blake, AgeAge, Caro Pepe and most recently a collaboration between Paul Monsters and Copyright. At Upfest this year, another wonderful piece was painted, this time by Brazilian artist Inke.


I had not heard of Inke before and chatted with him briefly on the Saturday of the festival. I think I must have utterly confused him, because I don’t think his English was too good, and my Portuguese is non-existent. I think I was blabbering on about the potential for a mix up with Inkie, the Bristol artist…an effort at trying to be humorous that fell a bit flat.


While he was spraying, the residents of the building emerged from their home, which all seemed a bit surreal. The piece itself took Inke quite a while to complete, and the rain certainly interrupted things. The final piece though I think is stunning, a really beautiful and exotic work.


The crab in the centre of the piece is sprayed in a bold floral pattern, but the shadows of the crab and its form are incredibly well presented. It reminds me a little of the way Louis Masai creates his quilted animals. Superb technique and one of my top pieces at Upfest 2017.

746. Wilder Street (15)

There is a lot to say about this remarkable recent piece by 3Dom in Wilder Street. I found out, while speaking to Alex from Where the Wall, that strictly speaking 3Dom did not have permission to spray the piece. Furthermore he sprayed over one of the landmark pieces left behind by Shalak Attack and Bruno Smokey when they visited Bristol last year.

I get the feeling that 3Dom got away with this misdemeanour on two counts…firstly his status as a local artist and secondly it is quite simply outstanding. The work in my eyes represents quite a departure from the usual wild and weird characters normally associated with his work. Here we see an intricate and beautiful study of floral patterns, shapes and colours, so very different from his previous work.

This is a truly outstanding piece and worth a trip to Wilder Street to grab a look. I noticed via 3Dom’s Insta account that he not so very long ago produced a similar style piece in London. This is the mark of an artist exploring new ideas and expressions, not something all are blessed with. I look forward to maybe seeing more of this stuff, which I understand was freestyled. Bravo!

549. York Road (1)

There are rewards to be had when making the effort to walk just that little bit further, or turn down a street you’ve not been down before. My reward recently for doing this was to come across this beautiful mural on the front of a small terraced house in Montpelier.

Of course it is by the unmistakable Alex Lucas, who really has stamped her mark all over the area, and added to it’s boho atmosphere. The floral designs are bold and colourful, but for me it is always the little animal characters that I find most enchanting.

There is a mouse ringing the doorbell, probably paying a visit and another mouse perched above the door. Perhaps my favourite of these though is the frog slumped on a brick ledge above the basement well.
