This vertical rectangular wall outside the Hen and Chicken has played host to a number of wonderful Upfest murals over the years, and this one by Rainbo is yet another super example. The piece I believe is called ‘Etherial Cloud Drakes’ and is a rather cheerful looking dragon painted because 2024 is the Chinese Year of the Dragon.

Rainbo comes from Hong Kong, and her artistic style reflects her heritage to some extent. To understand what I mean, you can look at more of her work from this gallery on her website. Interestingly her use of the word ‘drake’ in the title of the piece is actually a European name given to a particular type of dragon in legend and heraldry (had to look it up). Overall this piece is nicely thought out to fit the space and beautifully executed with some sumptuous colours and fine detail.

It has been a while since I last saw Ments painting, so it was great to see him working on this piece for Upfest. The nature of this year’s Upfest has meant that there is far less graffiti writing than in previous years, with more of a focus on high-end murals. Knowing that, it was extra-cool to see this abstract writing from Ments.

There is a beautiful flow through this piece, which has a wonderful natural vibe running through it. The gentle colours are held together in geometric ‘crystalline’ forms and transition markedly from left to right. I am guessing that this Bristol-based artist has been busy over the last couple of years, because I don’t recall seeing any street work for a very long time.

I first came across the work of Elaine Carr (Instagram – Cuicasolo) when I saw her iconic ‘Bristol’ piece in Dean Lane, painted across someone’s garden fence and gates. It was obvious even then that she is a talented artist and designer. Elaine Carr has a career in model making and set design, amongst other things, and has had little time for painting street walls, but from the small number of pieces I have seen, they are first class.

Although a little tricky to access, this is a beautiful and very stylish mural by Elaine Carr in the little outdoor seating area of the Hen and Chicken on North Street. The architectural design has all sorts of false perspectives and 3D tricks, not unlike the work of Escher. The subtle tones and colours are sublime and the including of a little bit of green landscape is very clever. I love this piece, which amply demonstrates the range and variety of walls painted at this year’s Upfest 75×75 event.

It seems I am drawn to the amazing work of Bex Glover, having recently shared two new pieces by her in Bristol. This was her Upfest 2018 piece and is neatly tucked away in the Hen and Chicken pub back yard and can still be viewed (having had a reprieve due to the absence of a festival this year).

Bex Glover’s elegant style is instantly recognisable and thoroughly accessible. Usually a natural/wildlife theme drawn out with simple clean lines and a colour palette that is so very easy on the eye and consistent between pieces. I am a big fan of her work and this is another example of her enormous talent.

The Hen and Chicken on North Street has a lot of wall space and is one of the focal points of Upfest. This particular wall has had some beauties on it in the past and this monochrome piece by 8Mail is no exception. Although this artist has been to Upfest for the last six years, I’m not sure I recall his work and can’t find any in my archives, but I do think I’ll have to go and take a better look.

Usually working in charcoals, this urban artist likes to capture chaotic and fleeting moments. There was just such a moment while he was painting the piece, when he tried to use the chair in the picture to stand. All I need to say is that the artist is a tall young man, and the chair was not designed for standing on.

This is a fine simple piece, that despite its simplicity contains real interest. I found it captivating.
