This is the third piece I have posted by KiKi? but I am still none the wiser about who the artist is nor indeed if they are actually called KiKi, I mean from this work it might even be Steven.
A sea monster probably, which reminds me in style a little of Norse carvings. There is something naive about the piece, but technically is is very nicely finished. I am on a mission to discover more about KiKi.
Getting to know an artist and to become familiar with their style and content is all part of the fun of hunting street art. I have only seen three pieces by KiKi? and so far haven’t been able to find anything on digital media about them. In a way, knowing nothing is a great place to start because you can come to your own conclusions about the work without external influences creating any bias .
I can honestly say from my limited exposure to KiKi that I am very struck by their work. It all feels pretty organic and centered around animals and beasts of one sort or another. This piece looks like some kind of Chinese dragon breathing fire and has an archaic feel to it…something you might see on the side of a temple for example.
The light at the ends of the St Werburghs tunnel make it very difficult to get an evenly lit picture, but even with the poor quality of photograph, I think you can see that this is a fine piece of work. I need to try and find out more about KiKi.
Right underneath the M32 in the middle of the DIY skate Park which is used by skaters in Bristol when it rains, is this unusual piece by an artist I’ve not come across before, KiKi. At least I think the signature is KiKi, and until I know any better that is what I shall call her/him. As you can see I haven’t been able to research the artist at all yet.
I really love the piece, both the style of it and the subject matter. It looks like some kind of sea monster, although not too scary. What I especially like is how skilfully the artist has used the difficult space that the column affords. Stylistically the piece is also really interesting, almost seeming to have a native North American look to it (or maybe that is just me). Anyhow I am looking forward to seeing a lot more from this artist. Bravo.
