What I really like about Mote’s approach to street art is that he is a very tidy artist. He likes to have a buffed wall to paint on, so that there are no distractions, and he keeps everything clean and tidy. Nice solid fills and crisp sharp lines. I am guessing he is a bit of a perfectionist.

This charming monster piece up at Purdown is a wonderful doodle character, with some nice colour fills and details. The eyes and eyelids work well, and the shadow cast onto the wall lifts the piece out. Altogether this is a rather good piece, one of many.

A rather nice, clean and tidy piece from the very productive Mote. In fact, I only post a fraction of his work, not because I don’t appreciate it (I really do) but because I don’t make it out to all the spots that he paints.

This one, under Brunel Way, is a corker, made all the more enjoyable by being painted on a buffed wall without distractions. Mote’s doodle-character style is constantly developing and growing, and his pieces are becoming more complex and larger. Although it is rather subtle, Mote has filled the character’s face with two shades of green, transitioning horizontally, and exchanging spots/dots. A very nice piece.

I am writing this last night, as I have a long journey tomorrow, heading for Pula and the last few days of our holiday. So this will be necessarily short, which is a pity because I like writing about Mote’s work.

This is a large piece has some kind of monster cow character (a creation of Mote’s fertile mind), and a message, which might have been added by someone else, saying ‘Animal farming causes climate chaos’. The tagged message completely baffles me, but confirms my belief that most taggers are imbeciles. A lovely, crazy piece from Mote.

4613. Brunel Way (166)

I was lucky enough to run into Mote when he was painting this larger-than-usual piece on the long wall under Brunel Way. And managed to have a good chat until the dog decided he’d had enough and started barking, he can be a real conversation-killer sometimes that dog of mine, although he was brilliantly behaved in Cheltenham the whole time we were there.

Mote is possibly the most productive artist in Bristol at the moment, and his pastel shades that he tends to use are a real hallmark of his work – If you’re looking for brash reds or gold or chrome, you’re unlikely to find them in his work, and you’ll have to settle for subtle.

This monster piece seems to show a monster snacking on a double ended other monster, although it is not altogether clear. As always with Mote’s work, the lines are precise and clean, the fills solid without underlying work seeping through. Creative and imaginative, Mote continues to dazzle us with his work.

4597. Cumberland Basin

All I can think of when I see this creature is that it looks like a Mote version of Big Bird. I am pretty certain that it was not his intention, but like an earworm, I just can’t shake it off, so I’ll just have to settle for that.

There is no stopping Mote at the moment, and I seem to be meeting him on a fairly regular basis these days – our clocks appear to be in sync. I like the way that Mote really seems to take care with his work, and likes to buff the wall first, before carefully putting down the layers of his piece. Always finished nicely, his work is tight – no blurred lines, no sloppiness, tight.

4583. M32 roundabout J3 (415)

It has been more than just a little fun watching Mote’s work develop over the last few months. His characteristic monsters and beasts are becoming something of a feature in many of the popular spots as well in some rather more remote places.

Mote’s designs are all incredibly original, and he never seems to paint the same character twice. His can control is really good and all of his works, which tend to be quite small, have some fine detail and are on point. This one on the M32 roundabout, his first in the spot, is one of his best yet.

4551. Cattle Market Road (12)

On my tours of different spots around Bristol, I have bumped into Mote several times now, and each time it has been a genuine pleasure to converse with him. I am really enjoying his solid fill monsters, each quite different from the last. It is always good to see an artist turn out variations of an idea instead of perfecting an idea, although both approaches are completely ok.

These two monsters are lurking behind a scooter stop, which I actually feel adds to the overall composition. It is as if they are looking after the scooters, and almost feels like a deliberate coming together, and the red colours match so well. I like the cartoon style that Mote uses that has the faintest touch of Gerald Scarfe about it – probably those swirly lines.

4380. Cumberland Basin

Mote certainly finds some secluded spots to practice his art and this one is tucked away in Cumberland Basin, which I only found because I decided to extend my usual circuit of the area a little. I’m not too sure how long this piece has been here, but it looks reasonably fresh.

The monsters that Mote creates are nicely thought out and designed, and his crisp, sharp lines and solid fills give away the identity of the artist in his unsigned pieces. Another common theme in Mote’s work is the use of strong colours, especially green, yellow and red all featuring in this piece. His monsters are all rather loveable and have added to the wonderful free art gallery that is available to all on the streets of Bristol.

4363. M32 Spot (137)

You can expect a whole lot more of these wonderful monster pieces from Mote, because I have a lot in my archive, and he paints regularly enough to keep me busy. This is a great example of his work, and also typifies his preference for columns. Although the monster might seem a little naive, it is actually beautifully painted and Mote takes his time to keep his lines sharp and his fills really solid.

I take great inspiration from artists like Mote, Enn Kay and Maybe Paints who are all pretty new to painting the streets and have come on really quickly, presenting some outstanding work. If I get a moment, I hope to do my first public piece this summer, following their brave example, very possibly on one of the columns under the M32.

4346. Cumberland Basin

I met Mote for the first time, not long ago, when he was painting a small piece up at Purdown Battery, and what a thoroughly pleasant experience it was too. He told me that he had always wanted to paint and get out there hitting walls, but life had taken him down a different path. Mote now finds himself in a situation where he can paint, and my goodness he has been making up for lost time. Bristol is festooned with his work, but this is the first piece of his to appear on Natural Adventures.

Mote is another character artist, specialising in monsters. His pieces tend to be smallish, but creative and imaginative. Mote uses bright colours (a lot of green) in his work and likes to keep sharp, crisp lines – he takes a lot of time to create his work, but it is time well spent. Look out for a whole ton more from this artist over coming months.
