It is always great to see the familiar chunky letters painted by Noise. I wonder whether Noise might be a bit of a ‘fair-weather’ artist, as he hasn’t been out painting much over the winter period, or maybe he has had other commitments that have kept him busy elsewhere.

Noise has compressed the letters a little to fit into the space, which makes them look even more chunky than usual. The rather dour colour and disposition of the letters is uplifted by the rather crude pink crosses, without which I think the graffiti writing could be a bit lost. A nice end result.

Oust, Stivs and Noise, Frome Side, Bristol, November 2024

This magnificent triptych forms one part of a larger paint jam under the M32 prompted by World Wall Stylers wi the theme of the animation Ninja Scroll – not a film I am familiar with. The three artists who have collaborated are Oust, Stivs and Noise.

To the left is some highly accomplished writing from Oust. Quite how it relates to Ninja Scroll, I don’t know, but having not seen the film, connections might be difficult for me to spot. There is a misty quality to the piece, and the 3D drop shadow is masterful.

The obvious focal point of the collaboration is the wonderful character piece in the middle by Stivs, whose talent appears to have no bounds. I am assuming that the character is taken from the animation, and is wielding a fine double ended sword. Stivs is so good at painting these kinds of characters.

To the right, the ubiquitous Noise has added his own inimitable style to the proceedings with some chunky bronze letters spelling out NOISE. His letters hive some nice fills and a contrasting pink drop shadow. The common factor with each of the three pieces is the greens-blue plasma cloud surrounding. Very nice work from the trio.

One of the reasons that I am able to dwell a little on going back through my archives is that the winter weather is finally getting the better of ‘fair-weather’ artists, and turnover has slowed considerably since the back end of November. Although it is never good to see a slow-down, the upside is that it does give me a bit of a breather and the chance to share some ‘forgotten’ pieces, including this fine collaboration from Noise and Zake.

I have said it before, that Zake loves to team up with anyone who is willing to paint with him, and in this piece he has combined really well with Noise, incorporating his cartoon character as the ‘O’ of NOISE. The deep stripy drop shadow lifts the collaboration and unintentionally mirrors the teeth of Zake’s character. This is a really satisfying collaboration to see, from two of Bristol’s best artists.

Noise has been one of the most regular Bristol writers in 2024, turning out numerous distinctive fat-letter pieces all over town. This is a particularly nice one on the curved wall in Dean Lane. If you like his work, then a quick look at this recently published gallery of his graffiti writing might be worthwhile.

The letters spelling out NOISE, although in darker colours with a dark background, are bursting with energy. The two tones of green work surprisingly well with the dark purple/black backdrop. Although I am sure it is unintentional, the ‘i’ resembles a nose, and weirdly if you take the ‘i’ out of noise, you get nose. Having seen the nose, you can’t unsee it. Nice one from Noise.

6460. St Werburghs tunnel (452)

One of the most powerful and energetic introductions to Bristol has been the emergence of Noise, over the last eighteen months or so. Since his arrival, he has been producing no end of pieces in his distinctive fat-letter style and collaborating successfully with several different artists. He is productive and talented, and fits into the Bristol way of things really well.

In this piece, in the tunnel, Noise has compressed his writing slightly, but has managed to do this without compromising his chunky letters. The colours work nicely, although being slightly on the dark side, they are a little difficult to do justice to in the murk of the tunnel. A gallery is long overdue… watch this space.

6380. Cumberland Basin

This is another section of the incredible World Wall Stylers ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’, paint jam from last month. I made a bit of a booboo with my photographs of this section, and have included the Jessica Rabbit character by Drake, on the right, and severed it from his piece of writing (to follow), But somehow I felt it worked better bookending the writing by Noise and Zake’s Baby Herman on the left. – this may have been a mistake.

Zake has been producing cartoon characters for as long as I have been posting his work, but this is the first time I have seen a character based on an existing artwork. Rather than being a faithful reproduction of Baby Herman, this is very much a Zake take on the little cigarette-smoking infant. Very nicely done.

Noise, as I have said countless times this year, is absolutely smashing it with every piece he paints, and this characteristic writing has very much adhered to the colours of the brief.

Finally the character of Jessica Rabbit really ought to be attached to the writing of Drake to its right, but I goofed, so it is here with the Noise and Zake pieces creating a rather nice little Triptych. This particular paint jam proved to be a fabulous showcase of talent. Big ups to Participants and to World Wall Stylers.

6372. Dean Lane skate park (750)

One of the more productive writers in Bristol over the past year has been Noise, whether painting alone or collaborating. Noise has settled into the Bristol scene seamlessly and feels like part of the furniture, even though I only really became aware of his work in the summer of 2023.

Noise generally paints quite large, expansive letters, and this time he has had to squeeze his letters into a fairly compressed spot and has managed pretty well. The fills in the letters are worth a closer look, with the lower fills looking like greeny-blue clouds and the upper fills cold and frosty icicles. Definitely time for a Noise gallery.

There is no doubt in my mind. I simply have to publish a gallery of great graffiti writing by Noise, because his work is now so completely bedded down in Bristol, something he has managed to do in a relatively short amount of time. As well as working solo, he has also teamed up with a host of other Bristol artists in his celebrated collaborations, which has helped him to become super-established.

This magnificent gold and red piece, painted on one of my favourite walls, is big and bold, and has the tiniest nod to calligraffiti on the up ticks on the tops of some of the letters. I like the shout-outs to Dibz and Fade, who were probably painting other walls in Dean Lane at the time, and interestingly the words ‘Joburg-Bristol’ which makes me think that perhaps Noise has South African connections.

6186. Cumberland Basin

I have to say that this was not a collaboration that I was expecting, but that is the joy of documenting street and graffiti art in this fine city. Noise has collaborated with several different artists in Bristol, so why not collaborate with Sait Bare? The two artists have gone for a colour coordinated theme that carries through both of their graffiti writing.

Noise has painted the left hand side with his chunky NOISE letters, and Sait Bare has written BARE in his slightly unruly style – together they compliment each other perfectly. I would guess that the character in the middle was probably a combined effort, but without asking them I can’t be certain. This is a very nicely produced collaboration and great surprise.
