901. Lower Approach Road (6)

Well this really is a magnificent and busy piece by SPZero76. The piece incorporates a train and track, which is entirely fitting to the I. K. Brunel inspired Temple Meads station, adjacent to this hoarding.

Somehow, by using limited colours on a black background, SPZero76 has created the effect of an etching, or at least that is how it looks to me. He uses the blue and purple combination a lot in his work – maybe he got a job lot of these colours.

So what else have we got going on? He has a dog puking up, I’m not certain why, and just to emphasise the point he writes ‘PUKE’ so that we are sure. There is a biker and the word ‘zoom’. Also SPZero has managed to incorporate the crew Lost Souls on neon lights on the buildings.

On the right hand end of the piece there is a lady taking a bath in the last carriage of the train which she appears to be sharing with an octopus and rubber duck. I really have no idea what is going on, but it is a great tribute to the crazy workings of SPZero76’s mind.

If you are at Temple Meads station and have a few moments to kill, it is well worth dropping down to the hoardings just to the left of the car park (as you leave the station). There are six wonderful pieces from six of Bristol’s great artists.

863. Dean Lane skate park (62)

I am absolutely loving this  EAT crew partnership of Kid Crayon and SPZero76. As street artists go, their styles are quite different, KC tending to have softer lines and whose characters have a kind of lumpy quality to them…I’m not sure I have used the right term there, but I know what I mean. SPZero76 tends to use sharper lines and his characters are altogether more angular and prickly (another dodgy art term).

I mention their styles, because, of all the works they have done together that I have seen, this is the one where their art is starting to merge or rub-off on one another. The left hand side id by Kid Crayon and the right hand side by SPZero76.

I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this piece, but love the sort of Summer watery feel to it all. A purple giant, some little ‘ginger bread man’ type figures and a pretty lady bathing with a rubber duck. KC is clearly bonkers.

On the other side of things, SPZero76 gives us a couple of snorkelers a flamingo rubber ring and a pirate ship. The couple are in love. SPZero too is completely bonkers.

I absolutely love this collaboration and even more enjoy the way that these two just seem to love to paint all the time, about anything. This is one of my favourite pieces so far this year. Bravo.

815. Millpond Street (2)

Aloha! Domestic Drain Services can be found just off the end of Millpond Street. I like the name of the street because it tells us something about the history of the area, I guess it all looked very different here a hundred years ago.

This is a wonderful collaborative curtain-raiser to Summer by SPZero76 and Kid Crayon of the EAT crew. The left hand side is characteristically SPZero76 and features a fine lady playing a ukulele next to one of his face masks that he paints a lot.

On the right hand side we have a fabulous ‘island life’ collection by Kid Crayon. I think the geography of the piece is a little confused however, Hawaii and Easter Island, but who cares about that, it is the cheery welcome and thoughts of Summer that appeal.

These two artists are working really well together at the moment, and I look forward to seeing more collaborations from the EAT crew.

749. Upfest 2016 (111)

One of the larger showcase pieces from Upfest 2016 was this wall in the beer garden of the Steam Crane pub on North Street. It is a wonderful collaboration by the Lost Souls crew, made up of Si Mitchell, SPZero76, Captain Kris and Squirl, although the latter did not participate on this occasion.

This was certainly one of the busier venues during the festival, probably on account of it being a pub, and it was quite tricky jostling for decent pictures of the crew at work. SPZero76 (seated above with the New York cap) though was very comfortable chatting with visitors, in fact I saw him talking more than I saw him spraying.

Si Mitchell (above) worked on the left hand side of the piece, SPZero76 on the middle section and Captain Kris on the right. The whole piece is a frenetic busy think, telling a story of I don’t know what, but I like the result very much.

I returned to the wall some months later to get a decent picture of the completed piece. Of course it is slightly compromised by pub furniture getting in the way a bit, but I think it is possible to get an idea of the great qualities of the piece. The section above of the strange man eating the happy octopus is by Si Mitchell.

The middle section (above) is so typically by SPZero76, with his dog character using a spray can.

The right hand section which completes this rather surreal piece is by Captain Kris, and as part of the seamless sequencing, the octopus makes an appearance in this panel too. A really beautifully worked fun piece.

 

685. The Bearpit (49)

This nice piece by SPZero76 was painted a few weeks back in the company of Cheba (the galactic bits to the left of the piece) and Kid Crayon whose pieces I have very recently posted.

I am beginning to think the animal I keep calling a raccoon might actually be a dog. I say this because Raccoons aren’t really a part of our British wildlife assemblage, so why would he feature one in his works? Yup it is a dog. As an aside, it makes me laugh when Hollywood movies, purporting to be set in England, make the terrible mistake of featuring raccoons (identifiable to an American audience, but a complete mystery to us Brits). One such movie was the recent 101 Dalmations live remake. Look out for it.

I’m not too sure who the ‘space lady’ is in this piece, but I like it that she has a spray can, just like so many of his characters do.

 

660. Millpond Street (1)

It seems strange that this is the first time I have posted about a piece on this landmark building…although it is possible I have written something before, but named it under M32. This is a fine collaboration – and not the first on this wall – by SPZero76 and Kid Crayon.

The building is owned by Domestic Drain Services and runs parallel to the M32. I understand, from speaking to the owners a week or two back that they invite SPZero76 and others to spray the building and in return they will pay for the spray paint.

The character on the right in the mask is by Kid Crayon and really showcases his development as a spray artist, having been something of a paste up specialist. I’m not sure what the ‘EAT’ reference is all about.

On the left hand side are a couple of great characters by SPZero76, whose work often features a raccoon and a ‘Pacific Island’ style mask. I would love to know where his influences came from to repeatedly use these motifs. This is a wonderful collaboration, and these two seem to work quite a lot together.

526. St Werburghs tunnel (3)

I have been holding back from posting these pictures, because although the collaboration between Kid Crayon and SPZero76 is magnificent, the photographs are pants. I have manipulated the light a little bit, but the colours simply don’t do the piece justice. The flash, used in one of the pictures simply bleaches the colours. All a bit rubbish and it exposes me as a non-photographer.

The composition is just crazy, characters firing water pistols at each other from flying cardboard boxes. Where did that idea come from? The styles of these two artists are quite contrasting, but the end result works really well.

Who is the lady and who is the bulldog in SPZero’s  half of this collab? This is a really fun piece, long since gone. I have to say at this point that Kid Crayon really is one of my favourite Bristol artists, and finding his work anywhere is a real treat for me. To find it together with the great SPZero76 makes it just that little bit more special.

293. M32 roundabout J3 (13)

Some time in Early June, a whole bunch of ASK and Lost Souls spent a day or two refreshing the walls at the M32. I love it when these guys do this, because there tends to be a common thread – for example a colour scheme – throughout the collaborative get-together. This is the first of several posts from this gathering.

This was the first time I have seen Kid Crayon and SPZero 76 working together, but curiously I have seen them collaborate since (another post soon). It will come as no surprise to regular readers that I am a massive fan of Kid Crayon, and this is a lovely example of his work, purple face and crayon making a return.

The SPZero 76 piece depicts a mask (I’m not sure if it is African or Pacific) which is a common feature in so many of his works. On this occasion he has done some other work with another artist, so had a busy day.

187. Stokes Croft, the Carriageworks (6)

Over the last weekend the fabulous pairing of SPZero76 and Mr Wigz got busy on one of the middle arches of the Carriageworks. Their combinations work very well and have a vibrancy and humour about them.

SPZero76 works on the characters, which often feature a raccoon, which is odd because despite them appearing in the live version of Disney’s 101 Dalmations, set in the UK, we don’t have them in this country. While Mr Wigz provides the wildstyle burner beneath.

135. Gloucester Road, Poppers

A wonderful new piece by SPZero76 has recently appeared on the side wall of Poppers, a party shop on the Gloucester Road. It would seem that SPZero76 has been rather busy lately, with a recent piece also appearing in Shoreditch, London. UPDATE 4 March 16: via Twitter, SPZero76 informes me that the wildstyle burner in the centre of this piece is by Mr Wigz, so it is a collaboration between the two.

I particularly like this new mural because it brightens up what was previously a rather dull alleyway. There are several references in the work including to Lost Souls (his crew) and to Massive Attack (Robert del Naja is an active street artist, 3D).
