This is a special piece for me, because I was present while Tao Create was painting it (for a short while, at least) and met her for the first time. I have been wanting to meet her for a while to be able to tell her how much I admire her work and how much she has improved in recent months. I think that meeting the artists is the bit I love most about photographing their art, as it gives you glimpses of insight into their personality and sometimes their inspirations and ideas.

This piece was painted to promote a Femme Fatale event on 6 April. Now, I am a little bit old and never been all that well-connected with the music scene since the 1980s, so I had to find out a little bit about what this was all about. This is what I came up with:

Femme Fatale Heartek MicroCabaRave

An event held at 395 on Saturday 6th April. Doors are at 17:00 with entertainment starting at 18:00. The event finishes at 01:00. The event has been tagged in the techno, jungle, dub, reggae and industrial categories.

I don’t much like posting promotional pieces, because I am a bit funny about that, it feels akin to advertising, but of course I make exceptions.

Tao Create’s portrait is copied from an image, not of anyone in particular, to represent the Femme Fatale idea. Given that Tao Create hasn’t painted all that many pieces in the photorealistic style, this is absolutely remarkable. I very much hope to see more of her work during 2024 and beyond, she is a real talent.

There are some pieces that stick in the mind, sometimes for a long while, and sometimes forever. This is one of those. This striking collaboration between Tao Create and Rozalita has embedded in memory, and it will be one of those iconic pieces that I will be able to recall and tell people about for as long as my mind is good.

On the left, Tao Create has painted a gorgeous portrait piece, and in doing so has shown us just how far she has come over the last two or three years. I can only think that she has been to art school, because the transformation is extraordinary. The near-photorealistic portrait is utterly captivating and the contours of the face are perfectly handled with skill using shading in browns and yellows. I cannot express how much I love this portrait, not how surprised I was to see that it was by Tao Create.

On the right is the third recent piece by Rozalita depicting Frida Kahlo, and it is another cracker, this time in various shades of yellow. There is a strength that comes from the portrait, perhaps reflecting the strength of Kahlo herself. The flower design is, I think, also by Rozalita, who has undergone a renaissance lately. Oh joy. My favourite piece of the year.

St Werburghs tunnel is a funny spot. Sometimes you can go for long periods when not much changes, and then you go through a rush of activity, and need to be on top of it pretty much every day.

This glorious piece by Tao.create was painted with the LRS crew, only a short while after the Bnie paint jam on the opposite wall. I haven’t seen much from Tao for a long while, so this was most welcome. There is talent and a style here that we definitely need to see more of on Bristol’s streets. The portrait is captivating, and beautifully shaded in purple tones. More practice will add confidence with regard to proportions and scale of the features. Welcome back… more please.

4117. Dean Lane skate park (446)

Painted alongside Rozalita and 3F fino on the Sally Army wall at Dean Lane skate park, this striking portrait is by Tao.create. I have only seen a handful of pieces by the artist and I have liked what I have seen so far, but this is the best yet and introduces her work to a larger and more engaged audience.

The bright portraits demands to be looked at and is big, bold and colourful. Some elements are better painted than others, the hair is very nicely done, and some of the features more developed than others (for example the nose has more work and detail than the mouth). I would like to think that Tao.create will continue to develop her obvious skills and follow in the footsteps of other Bristol portrait artists such as Pekoe and Hazard. Definitely one to look out for.

3542. Frome side (9)

One of the real privileges of the last year or so has been to witness the emergence of so many new street artists in Bristol, and even more exciting is that roughly half of them are female and are absolutely smashing it. There almost seems to be a new school of female artists loosely linked and bringing their own particular colourful blend of art. Exciting times.

One of these artists is Tao.create whose beautiful trapeze artist is still adorning one of the columns at the M32 Spot. This looks like a practice piece to me although it is difficult to say. Tao.create seems to love the body form and has a great skill for portraying movement. Equally clever is the absence of facial features which helps to focus our gaze on the whole body shape. I love the understated nature and location of this piece. I can’t wait to see more.

At times photographing and writing about street art requires some detective work, tracking down who might have painted a particular piece. This is especially true when new artists burst onto the scene. I shan’t go into the detail of how I found Tao.create, suffice it to say that it wasn’t easy.

I believe that this might be her first wall in Bristol, although I might be wrong there, but if it is, what a fabulous debut. The trapeze artist has a lovely feel about her and a grace and poise that comes across really well. The colours and shadings are very nicely done and the framing of the subject works very well on a column – it would look rather awkward on a landscape wall. Let’s hope this is the first of many.
