5456. East Street

I went on a bit of a wild goose chase last week looking for some boards in Bedminster, but was completely unable to find them. The walk, however, took me to East Street after working hours and all the shops were closed, and I was in shutter heaven.

This shutter piece by Taboo, which I think is unlikely to be a commission, but you never know, spells out Boser, the significance of which passes me by. The anti-style letters are accompanied by an anti-style cartoon Tom cat from Tom and Jerry, with four ‘echo’ faces adjacent to the first. Typically anarchic and somehow charmingly comforting, this Taboo piece ticks all the right boxes. I am not too sure about the orange figure 8, which isn’t a motif I have seen in his work before, and I believe it to be a subsequent addition by a tagger, although the orange does match the letter ‘B’ in his signature. A mystery.

Although I have never met Wispa, I have recently had a conversation with her via Instagram messenger, and it is comforting to know that she is supportive of me sharing photographs of her work and writing posts like this one. It is just a matter of time before I am able to put a face to a name, and I only missed her by a whisker in Cheltenham. Speaking of whiskers, this is a wonderful piece featuring Tom the cat in Sparke Evans Park.

Once again Wispa delights with this outstanding piece of writing, and fills to die for. I don’t quite know how she does it, but she has great judgement in getting the right composition and proportions in her fills, supported by great colour selections. The letters spelling WISPA are nicely done and lifted with a white 3D drop shadow.

Wispa usually accompanies her work with a character and in this one we are treated to a fun Tom cat from the cartoon Tom and Jerry. It is always a great pleasure to find pieces by Wispa, and I hope she continues to visit Bristol as often as she is able to.

2962. Dean Lane skate park (315)

I don’t know this artist’s street name, but I call him Taboo because I use the convention of naming him after the letters he writes. His Instagram account is @forbidden_association which doesn’t tell us much more about him.

This new piece in Dean Lane is really nicely done and incorporates Tom Cat from Tom and Jerry. The letters, which spell out TABOO, are nicely done and have a chunky heavy look about them which is typical of the artist. If you are looking for a light touch, fine detail and finesse, you are unlikely to find it here, and yet the character element of the piece has a much softer touch. A really nice and rather unusual piece.
