1667. Upfest 2018 (18)

Cheo is a Bristol (and beyond) street art legend, and his involvement in Upfest is always eagerly anticipated. In the last few years Cheo has been quite dominant at the festival, so this year’s rather modest participation came as a bit of a surprise, his piece however reached all the high standards you expect to see from him.

Are we supposed to guess at who is hidden under the paper bag? My immediate assumption, given the Simpsons theme of the festival is that it is the mischievious Bart, but I may be wide of the mark and there may be another story going on here.

Somehow Upfest simply wouldn’t feel like Upfest without some contribution from Cheo, and it is great to see his work on a wall that he obviously enjoys, as he has had several pieces on this wall outside the Bristol Standard, in the past. Great stuff.

1652. M32 cycle path (17)

I really rather like this creature created by Kool Hand in the cycle path that runs alongside the M32. Technically, although a cycle path, it has been out of asction for several months now due to construction work, which probably makes spraying this particular wall a little less hazardous.

I’ve noticed that Kool Hand seems to favour using a white background, which really helps to bring out the contrasting colours he uses for his characters. Always crisp and clean, Kool Hand tends to use only a few bold colours, together with a little shading to create these striking pieces. This creature reminds me of primative marine life forms from earlier geological ages. Nice work.

1638. The Bearpit (155)

Well what can I say about Nevla? Well the first thing I can say is that I met him at Upfest and had a good long chat with him…and what a decent fellow he is, just like so many of the street/graff artists in Bristol. I’ll keep my powder dry about our conversation for when I post his Upfest piece.

This is a lovely piece, that can be easily missed, on the ramp down into The Bearpit on the north side of the roundabout. The fun cartoon character is accompanied by the words ‘stay fresh’, and I think this piece certainly manages to do this. I am really enjoying witnessing the progress of this artist, who tells me he has been spraying walls for about a year now.

1636. M32 Roundabout J3 (90)

This is the second of two recent pieces by the marvelous Tasha Bee. Regulars will know that I admire her work a great deal, and this piece is no exception to that. One of the things I love about her art is that I rarely go looking for it, tending to find it instead when I am out on one of my little expeditions.

In this one, which is just outside the roundabout on the St Pauls side, there are two serene figures in purple and blue facing each other. Consistent with her work, both have closed eyes and a calmness about them. I rather like the ear decorations, one is a yin yang symbol and the other a peace symbol. A lovely find.

1602. Moon Street (51)

Splat! The more I see of Nevla’s work, the more I want to see. He is emerging as one of my favourite local artists and is becoming bolder with his pieces and his locations. Usually working in only two or three colours he creates these characters and sometimes introduces little philosophical comments to add depth to his work.

I particularly like the writing (ALVEN – NEVLA – get it?), where he has given a double line accent in the shadow of his letters which really lifts them off the wall. Beautifully done. He has also used a vanishing point for his 3D work, similar to the way Elvs does. This is a wholly satisfying piece by Nevla…upwards and onwards.

1598. Moon Street (49)

Standing cheek to cheek with one of Laic’s acid house skeletons in Moon Street is this little character by an artist that I don’t know but who I am calling BTW until I know any better. I recently posted another of their pieces in The Bearpit that featured this same half-mutilated character.

It is a funny thing, but I didn’t notice the bone when I first photographed these pieces, probably because the upper half of the character has enough going on to distract the eye. There is something about the work of BTW that reminds me of a kind of Charlie Brown meets Southpark thing going. Of course that might only be me. Nice little piece.

1584. The Bearpit (151)

I am taking a bit of a punt here, because I want to start posting pieces by this artist (of which I have many) and guessing that from the signature their name is BTW…of course initials on street art can mean a plethora of things, including a crew name or respected fellow artist or tribute, for example. So for now and until I know better I will refer to the artist as BTW.

BTW? The Bearpit, Bristol, June 2018
BTW? The Bearpit, Bristol, June 2018

This is one of the larger pieces that I have seen from the artist and is consistent with the predominantly monotone style, although there is a dash of pink in this one. The character in the Nike hat is a half person which has been chomped below the waiste and I’m not too sure what the other little characters are, but it is a fun piece. I rather like this cartoon style and look forward to posting a few more pieces by BTW.

1579. Norfolk Place (3)

Oh, will this gorgeous weather never end? It is causing havoc with my photographs!

No prizes for guessing who this glorious piece is by, it is of course Deamze, the master of wildstyle writing accompanied by a cartoon character.

Deamze, Norfolk Place, Bristol, June 2018
Deamze, Norfolk Place, Bristol, June 2018

The Character in this piece is a rather worse-for-wear looking Batman with the obligatory spray can. Even though the work is on a textured surface, the piece is crisp and clean.

Deamze, Norfolk Place, Bristol, June 2018
Deamze, Norfolk Place, Bristol, June 2018

Deamze uses several writing styles in his work, and this one incorporates his zig-zaggy shapes that make up the letters D E A M Z. A lovely fresh piece for the summer.

1571. M32 roundabout J3 (88)

What a lovely collaboration between two artists that are highly regarded in Bristol, but whose work I don’t often get to see, Ulow and Hemper. The character on the left is by Ulow and is expertly painted. It is impossible not to marvel at the subtle shades he uses and the folds in the material – a sophisticated cartoon style character.

Hemper, M32 roundabout, Bristol, June 2018
Hemper, M32 roundabout, Bristol, June 2018

On the right is a wonderful piece of writing from the master Hemper. I wonder if he needed an extra foot of height on this wall. I have found it hard to find out too much about Hemper, but keep coming across his work from time to time. I have found the best way to find out more about the artists is through a serendipitous meeting while they are at work. This has not yet happened between me and Hemper, although it has with Ulow.
