6468. L Dub (57)

Oh what a beauty! I was beginning to wonder if Grimes might have moved away, as I hadn’t seen any new pieces from him for a little while, and then I came across this stunning new piece at L Dub. I can’t really put into words how good I think this piece is, and it is especially good, as I think it was his second attempt in this spot over a couple of days. The first one I think got painted over almost immediately, which was unlucky timing.

The intricate fills in the blue letters are worthy of note on their own, but when you look at the whole thing, it is bursting with energy, movement and colour. The letters spell GRIME and are given centre stage through the deployment of a magnificent background of pink checks and an orange plasma beam. Totally brilliant. Bravo!

Grimes has been smashing it all summer with his colourful and energetic pieces, and this one on the long hoarding at Greenbank simply adds another to his expanding portfolio. Sadly, we’re now entering the last days of the Raj with this particular spot, as the development of the site is nearing completion. It will be a sad day when the hoarding comes down, but illustrative of the temporary nature of street/graffiti art.

The letters in ‘fruits of the forest’ colours spell out GRIME, and as ever have an incredible sense of movement about them. There is something rather lyrical about Grimes’ writing, if that makes any sense at all, like visual poetry. Another great piece from Grimes, and surely about time for a gallery?

It is becoming a most welcome and wonderful thing, finding new pieces by Grimes, and this recent wildstyle writing on the M32 roundabout is an absolute belter. His bright and vibrant style is becoming established as a regular sight in the Bristol scene.

In this piece Grimes has written his letters and filled them with kind of fruits of the forest colours, bordered with yellow, and featuring an electric blue plasma spark running through the whole piece. There is a rather curious and slightly off-topic background of blue spheres, which, if I am honest, I am not sure add anything extra to the piece. More to come from this rising star.

6260. Leonard Lane (48)

He gets absolutely everywhere, does Grimes, and what a delightful thing that is. He has even made it into the narrow Leonard Lane with this fine chrome piece. You might spot some double yellow lines, that could possibly be the most useless yellow lines in the country, given that it is a dead end, incredibly narrow and if a driver was stupid enough to drive into the lane, they might never get back out again.

Even when he paints in a single colour, Grimes manages to generate great energy from the form of his letters and in this case some orange ‘flame’ decorations around the perimeter. The letters spell out GRIME and are beautifully finished with a decent 3D drop shadow border. Still more to come from this relative newcomer to Bristol.

An important part of becoming established in whatever field you operate in is presence and consistency, without either of which it is all too easy to fall off the radar. Grimes, since his arrival in Bristol, has been both present and consistent and has been noticed for it. A third element is quality, because you can be both present and consistent, but also rubbish, like a lot of taggers for example, but Grimes’ work is fabulous and lifts him above the norm.

This is a really fabulous purple and orange piece which, like all of his work I have seen, is full of energy and movement. It is interesting to note the impact the texture of the wall has on a piece, for example the right-hand quarter of this piece sits on a more bumpy surface, whereas the left-hand side is painted on a smoother rendered section, and you can see the difference. Everything about this piece is god, and I continue to enjoy this journey.

This piece by Grimes once again confirms how he is establishing himself on the Bristol street/graffiti art scene and becoming part of the furniture round here. There is an incredible amount of energy that is emitted by his pieces, which is difficult to pin down, but the combination of colours and design really hit the mark.

I don’t know where Grimes came from before he became really active in the city, but his Instagram feed which goes back to 2019 suggests he has always been here, perhaps just waiting for the moment and confidence to hit our walls big time. He painted this as part of a four-way paint jam with Sage, Zaxer One and Alker. Bright, colourful, vibrant and very welcome, I am convinced you’ll be seeing plenty more from Grimes on Natural Adventures.

At the end of each month I tend to dig out a few pieces that have managed to get trapped in my vast archive, which is organised into monthly files, and this is a piece by Grimes that I photographed back in March, but never quite got round to posting.

I think it is fair to say that Grimes has now fully bedded down as a Bristol graffiti writer, and his lively style is appearing reasonably frequently in most of the main graffiti spots in town. This yellow piece is full of energy, which is created by the shapes of his letters, highlights, and in this instance a dynamic background of cartoon pink flames. Two or three starbursts also create a sense of movement and dazzle. It won’t be too long before I have enough Grimes pieces to create a gallery.

Grimes is a graffiti writer who burst onto the Bristol scene a few months back, and has already had a significant impact. His energetic pieces tend to be full of vibrant colour and movement, this one being a great example. The wall he has chosen at one of the underpass entrances on the M32 roundabout is not the easiest to paint because of the slope, but Grimes has done a good job.

The orange, red and green combination of colours has worked really well and the fills patterns, which are a bit of a trademark, are really on point. The letters, spelling GRIMES are perfectly set on an aquatic blue bubbly backdrop and wispy grey ‘flames’. A really accomplished and enjoyable piece.

6062. River Avon (62)

Returning to what I would call ‘everyday’ Bristol street/graffiti art after an Upfest interlude (more of those to come), I present another wonderfully busy piece by Grimes. This is a graffiti artist who burst onto the scene a few months ago, and has settled in immediately, producing some realy good pieces along thee way.

This one on the cycle path alongside the River Avon has something of a carnal feel about it. There is no doubt that his pieces are full of movement and vibrancy. If you look carefully, you can make out the letters GRIMES, but it is the outstanding fills and clean borders that lifts this piece above the ordinary into the next level. I am very much enjoying the emergence of this graffiti writer in Bristol.

6040. Peel Street Green (30)

It feels a little odd that this is only the 30th piece that I have posted from Peel Street Green. Admittedly, I arrived at the show very late with this spot, and have only been swinging by the place since November 2021. What I particularly like about the long wall here is that it has delineated large sections which tend to be occupied by one artist in each, creating an informal outdoor gallery atmosphere. The artwork here can be very hit-and-miss, but this one from Grimes is most certainly a hit.

The letters in this busy work spell out the artist’s name in lime green and khaki colours, augmented with some wonderful black accents, and a cheeky grin in the ‘G’. The drop shadow is expertly done, helping the piece to pop from the wall. The graffiti writing is set on a swirly patterned red backdrop, contrasting nicely with the greens. I like the little shout-out to Cort whose piece Grimes painted over. Respect.
