Here he is again with some more bright and striking pieces of graffiti writing. I am of course talking about the prolific Klashwhensober. It is strange, but there was a time a few months ago when I was bumping into Klashwhensober at least once a week, and our clocks were in sync… however, I haven’t seen him for quite a while now. The same thing happened with Werm.

Both of these pieces are at Greenbank, and a feast for the eyes. The first, spelling SOBER is really eye-catching and is notable for the smorgasbord of fills transitioning horizontally through the piece with interest through every layer, truly a thing of beauty.

The second piece is slightly more muted, but still beautifully presented. Spelling KLASH, this piece again offers some exquisite fill patterns and colours, complemented with a beautifully painted 3D shadow with a central disappearing point. Both pieces are top notch and a real celebration of Klashwhensober’s workmanship. Bravo!

Today’s posts are the last of my holiday posts, and then tomorrow, I am back to work and the humdrum routine until our next break. First up today are a couple of pieces from Klashwhensober (surely a gallery coming up soon…) from Greenbank.

The first is a nice black-lettered SOBER with a yellow and green blotchy 3D shadow. There is a pink string running about the piece with some rather nice bubbles in various places.

The second piece, possibly painted around the same time, is a stunning, energetic piece in orange and red, also spelling out SOBER, and the composition and colour choices really work for me. The fills and use of colours in them are some of his finest, and the letters lifted with the very tidy light blue 3D shadow. The stars and lines around the perimeter are the icing on the cake of a first-class piece. An excellent bit of writing from Klashwhensober.

4582. M32 Cycle path (181)

Klashwhensober is an artist I like very much, he is a kind and thoughtful man who uses his art, in part, as a way of being mindful, of taking care of his mental health. It is for exactly the same reason that I write this blog, and collect all the content for it.

I think that Klashwhensober has absolutely smashed it with this piece along the cycle path. In my view it is his best piece to date where all the elements have come together perfectly. The colour palette is superb, the fills absolutely amazing and the finishing is near perfect. Klashwhensober has certainly set a high bar with this one.

4524. M32 Cycle path (177)

Very short of time today, so this write-up will be relatively brief. Klashwhensober is a lovely guy who is smashing out pieces all over the place, and I find it quite hard to keep up with them, so I have started to gather them up, writing about more than one per post. If I didn’t do this, I wouldn’t be able to share them all.

This selection are all recent pieces along the M32 Cycle path, each very different, but in the Klashwhensober style. This first one spells out KLASH in lovely 3D letters with a colourful and imaginative array of fills and given a bit of pink splat treatment for good measure.

The second piece, pretty much opposite the first, is once again full of colour and dynamism, spelling out SOBA, some patterns in the lower half of the letters are similar to those in the first piece.  I rather like the explosion in the middle of the letters, which has contrasting effects above and below the transition line.

The final piece is a few yards further along the path, spelling SOBER, and is once again a tidy piece with a nice 3D effect and central vanishing point. The theme with all three of these seems to be around explosions of some kind or another, bright lights and colour emanating from a central point and radiating outwards. I suspect there is some deep conscious or unconscious meaning here – I shall have to ask him next time I see him.

4489. Frome Side (15)

I bring you a couple of nice pieces from Klashwhensober from underneath the M32, the bit that is over the Bristol Frome (hence Frome Side), and adjacent to the M32 Spot. As with several other prolific artists, I have started to post more than one piece at a time if they are from around the same time in the same location, simply because I have a backlog of unpublished pictures that is swelling immeasurably, thanks to Upfest 2022 and a short trip to Porto, with its emerging street art scene.

The first piece is a beautifully colourful and happy SOBA piece that is filled with a natural scene including clouds, some birds and a superb purple flower. There is more going on here, though, with a green line that looks liked barbed wire running across the piece. I’ll need to ask Klashwhensober what it is all about next time I see him. I like the KLASH block letters on the ‘H’ too.

His second piece, which might have been his first piece, is another set of SOBA letters, with an icy theme happening. The letters are filled with what looks like cracked ice, and the bottom of the letters are fragmenting in frozen blocks and falling to the ground. A fire in the centre of the piece provides an additional burst of colour. Both pieces are nicely done and very ‘Klashwhensober’ish’ in style.

4397. Moon Street (92)

It was while he was just setting up to paint this piece that I met Klashwhensober for the second or third time… I came back a couple of days later to photograph the final piece. This is another classic from the artist who never stops, and features his ‘Klash’ variant of letters.

I am guessing that Klashwhensober has painted these letter forms so many times that the interest comes from the fills, and here he has added interest with some touches of red and orange at the top left and bottom right and connected them with ribbons of red. I’m not sure what it all represents, but it is a nice irregular effect. When we spoke, he told me about another of his pieces in a hoarding opposite, so I have included it here for good measure.

I believe that Klashwhensober had painted a piece here before, but it had been overpainted, so he returned to claim back the spot. This piece spells out SOBA and once again the interest here is in his use of fill patterns. The three horizontally graded colours are augmented with stars, circles, rods and little curved bars. There is so much more to share with ypou from this artist, but I don’t know how I’m going to squeeze him in. I’ll have to find a way.

4375. St Werburghs tunnel (287)

This is definitely one of those occasions when you get more for your money, to loosely use an expression, because as we already know, street/graffiti art is completely free… imagine that, completely free art for all to enjoy, no entrance fee required. A double helping from Klashwhensober, which is surely a treat to savour. In this double act, we have two of his monikers, ‘Klash’ and ‘Sober’.

To the left is Klash written in his long slim lettering and a gorgeous transition fill from blue to pink, with some lovely patterns spanning the letters. The whole thing is coated in a kind of green goo, that Face 1st would approve of.

To the right of the pair of the work is the word Sober which again has lovely slim curvy letters and a superb red/orange 3D shadow shared across both words – with regard to the 3D shadow, Klashwhensober has a vanishing point somewhere behind the piece and the shadows work in both directions. The imaginative patterns and fills are a joy to behold, and a specialism that Klashwhensober works really hard on.

I met Klashwhensober again yesterday on the M32 cycle path, and it was another pleasurable experience. We chewed the fat for a little while, and discussed different pieces and styles, amongst other things. I think that we must have similar body clocks, as we keep meeting – three times now in just over a week.

4368. M32 roundabout J2 (1)

You know when an artist is in high-productivity mode, when the frequency of meetings is high. In the past week or so, I have met Klashwhensober twice, and both times stopped for a nice chat. I had shared links to posts on Natural Adventures, and bless him, he had read them, which was most kind, so we chatted a little about that. This piece is one of several that I photographed a couple of weeks back, investigating all the tunnels under the M32 roundabout, junction 2.

I am not a big fan of tunnel pieces, because the lighting is always very tricky, and it is difficult to capture a whole piece in the frame due to the narrowness of the tunnel. The colours used in this ‘FLASH’ piece are most striking, and there is a creative and interesting cow-spot pattern fill. I mentioned to Klashwhensober that I might have to start posting several pieces of his at a time, because there are just too many to do single posts each time – there would be precious little else on the blog.

4328. M32 roundabout J3 (399)

I can’t quite work something out. I have only been aware of Klashwhensober for a couple of months, and although I have seen some of his ‘Sober’, ‘Soba’, ‘Klash’ and ‘Flash’ pieces for a little while longer, he seems to be everywhere I look at the moment. Did I miss something before, or has he gone completely nuts. I think I have photographed at least ten of his pieces in my last three or four trips out.

This Sober piece is a bit of a beauty on the M32 roundabout. The letters are unmistakably Klashwhensober’s, but it is the fills that are superb, with the red and blue ‘sprinkles’ transitioning along the horizontal divide of colour. The white highlights help the piece to ‘pop’ out giving it the 3D effect. And the whole thing is beautifully finished. There is a lot to like about this piece of writing.

4258. M32 roundabout J3 (385)

You can expect to see a few more pieces by Klashwhensober in the coming days and weeks now that he has firmly established himself on my radar. This piece spelling out SOBA was recently sprayed on the M32 roundabout.

The bold writing is accompanied with a rather brash character face in a baseball cap, making up the ‘O’ letter. There is some great fill work going on here and an energetic feel about the whole thing. Another member of the LRS crew that seems to be growing by the day. A nice piece.
