7393. Montpelier Park

Tucked away in this corner of Montpelier Park is a curious strawberry piece by Lis. It is curious, simply because strawberries aren’t exactly front of mind during the winter. Lis has painted in this spot before, and seems to like its remoteness.

I have noticed that for many artists, there has been a bit of a slowdown during the colder months of the year and Lis would fall into that category, so I was happy to find this quirky piece in Montpelier. The concentric rings around the piece are in keeping with a few of her pieces and may represent a ‘black hole’ into another place.

Even though Lis painted this piece well in advance of Halloween, such is my huge backlog of photographs, I am still several days late posting it, and I have loads of other Halloween pieces that I might just clear by Christmas.

This piece reminds me of one she painted under the M32 as it is like an archway with a vortex into another world or domain. A couple of menacing crows holding weapons in their beaks add a bit of horror threat, and of course there are a couple of spider’s web decorations. A nicely painted piece as part of a mini paint jam with Rowzgraff and Ozuk.

7197. Montpelier Park

I was lucky enough to meet Lis for the first time this week while she was painting with Weas(el) on the M32 roundabout. Of course, I immediately recognised her work and introduced myself. Lis gave me a great big hug, which was very sweet and kind. I guess that what I write here on the pages of Natural Adventures can land well with the artists themselves, which gives me a warm glow. We chatted for a while and I told her how much I admired her work and have been enjoying her journey as a street artist.

In this piece she has reverted to her ‘sure thing’ mushroom design, which is now more confidently presented than some of her earlier ‘shrooms (see below), and more in keeping with using spray paint. I love the swirly designs on the cap, and the gills are nicely represented. Looking forward to lots more from Lis.

This wonderful piece is far and away the largest mural I have seen from Lis (Le Imposter Design) to date, and I was really lucky to find and photograph it, as it only lasted a day or two. Watching Lis develop and grow in confidence over the last year or so has been one of the great joys of doing what I do, and this piece brings together a whole bunch of ideas into a natural ensemble.

Let’s start with the writing – I think this is the first time I have seen Lis write anything, and it really isn’t a bad effort, and the letters and fills are commensurate with the mood of the whole piece (UPDATE: Lis tells me that the writing and the Octopus are by her friend and collaborator Elsa Bee). The pond scene with the dragonflies and bulrushes is unusual and uplifting, and although the octopus is a bit incongruous, he seems to be having a great time (which knowing it is by another artist now makes complete sense). A natural salsa. Lis is developing a lovely style all of her own, and I hope very much to meet her one day to tell her how good I think her work is.

7041. St Werburghs tunnel (514)

I was rather hoping that this lovely turtle piece by Lis was going to last a while at the entrance to St Werburghs tunnel, but alas it was painted over after about a week. I was surprised, because it was painted on a bit of wall which has had a rather low turnover in recent years, and it was a fine and rather iconic piece, very much in keeping with the zeitgeist of the area.

I would say, with a touch of bias as a former marine biologist, that this is one of her best pieces to date. The Turtle itself is accurately represented, and the lines pretty clean and decorations tidily done. Lis’ inexorable progress continues apace.

7023. M32 Spot (202)

It was easy to spot that this bright and colourful piece on a support column under the M32 was by Lis. Less easy was to interpret what is going on here so I turned to Instagram to see how the artist described the piece in her own words. The answer “Bright and tempting tree trunk portal” painted during a Bristol Mural Collective paint jam.

The woodland theme is something that Lis clearly enjoys, along with nature too, and she has painted a couple of hallmark toadstools in the tree trunk. There is a lot of detail in the piece, and I love the depth and perspective on the signpost arrow. some woodland flowers finish the piece off beautifully. It is always a genuine pleasure to hunt down or stumble across artworks by Lis.

6957. Cumberland Basin

Lis (Le Imposter Design) continues on her street art journey, developing new ideas and techniques along the way. Imagination and creativity seem to come quite easily to her and every new piece is distinct and quite different from the last.

Described as a ‘silly one’ by Lis, this looks like an alien piece, with the words ‘They’re coming’ in rather nice neon-style writing at the top. The character shows some development, and although perhaps not the greatest piece of art in the world, it demonstrates her desire to push boundaries and try out new ideas and styles. I am so much enjoying her journey.

6943. St Werburghs tunnel (500)

I must’ve walked past this little beauty by Lis several time before I noticed it. It is heavily disguised, sitting on a larger piece, and easy to miss (obviously). I felt rather clever when I spotted it, but later realised, when looking at her Instagram feed, that it had been there for weeks.

The heart with a sword running through it and a snake is a stunning motif, and looks like a tattoo sample. The fine work is a combination of spray paint and she used it as an opportunity to try out some small stencils. This is so typical of Lis, expanding her portfolio and improving her technique and skills.

6899. Greenbank (156)

I have only one big regret about the Greenbank spot, and that is that I was very late joining the party, and missed hundreds of fabulous pieces, simply because I didn’t know where the spot was. The hoarding is now entering its final age, as the developments accelerate towards their completion. In the twinkling of an eye, this spot and all the great art it has hosted will be gone forever and largely forgotten.

I don’t know how old this little piece of installation art from LIS is, but I don’t recall seeing it before. It is a wonderful scene painted onto a wooden disc and stuck high up on the Greenbank hoarding. This feels like a bit of a throwback to the kind of work I first saw by the artist, before she discovered spray cans. The delightful scene looks like the corner of a room or studio filled with lovely plant and fungus pictures on the wall. A beautiful little miniature, that I was sorely tempted to purloin, but I am not like that.

6878. Dean Lane skate park (824)

Lis seems to do herself proud every time she goes out to paint, and this is another fine outing, with a couple of small pieces in Dean Lane. Here she has painted one of her mushrooms, but this time as a rather cute skateboarding character, which is totally appropriate for the spot.

I anticipate a great future for Lis, who I am sure will start to attract commissions, the more she practices and the more exposure she gets. As well as this character piece, she also left behind a little ‘extra’ on a nearby wall, featuring a cluster of toadstools. This is going to be a most enjoyable journey as Lis goes from strength to strength.
