The day this was painted, I was lucky enough to meet the artist, and we stopped for a long conversation. Although he writes MICHAL here, he is also known as Miso, and I have referred to him as such in collaborations he has made with Zase and Real143. What they have in common is their Slovakian nationality, which I asked him about. He told me that Decor, who used to collaborate with Zase before returning to his homeland, is considered to be a bit of a street art god back home.

I was first attracted to this piece by the way Michal had picked out the brickwork with different colours, giving the background a pixelated appearance. The beautifully written letters have a lovely proportion about them and a gentle orange colour transition, well blended, horizontally from light to dark. A black drop shadow lifts the piece from the wall in this fine piece from a lovely gentleman.

I was lucky enough to meet Michal a week or so after photographing this piece while he was painting in Peel Street Green. I stopped to have quite a long chat with him and he is a really interesting artist who works as a chef in Bristol. He was telling me all about the Slovakian (where he is from) street art scene, in particular about Dekor, who used to paint with Zase in Bristol, who is revered as a ‘god’ of street art back in Slovakia.

His letters spell out Michal, he is known as Miso and has appeared here before in some collaboration pieces with Zase. He paints his letters freestyle, in other words from his head and not a pre-drafted design. This is a beautifully worked chrome piece with some accent spots adding just the right amount of detail. The blue splat background does just enough to make it stand out from the graffitied wall. Nice work, watch out for more soon.

For a short period in September, we were privileged to see a few pieces from Zase, a well known Bristol street artist, painting alongside what I assume were friends who were visiting. It would seem that it took the enthusiasm of these friends to encourage Zase to his some walls – good news indeed. This is a collaborative wall on the side of the swimming pool at Dean Lane by Miso, Zase and Real 143.

First up, and setting the tone with an unusual colour scheme, is this rather nice blocky piece by Miso. The piece cleverly plays with light and shade, giving the impression that the upper half is in shadow, which it isn’t. The effect is accentuated by darker shades on the upper half, and bright highlights glowing like lights. Playful stuff.

In the middle Zase has written out his name in his anamorphic style, playing tricks with the eyes, creating an extraordinary three-dimensional effect. Again, the use of light and shade helps to create this illusion.

To the right, and continuing the colour scheme, is another anamorphic piece, this time by Real143, and adopting a quite different overall style. This piece is much softer, with flowing rounded lines that together build an object with depth running deep into the wall. All three pieces play tricks with our eyes and this is a very special collaboration indeed.
