The Hass is an exceptional street artist whose talents never cease to amaze me, and he has knocked it out of the park with this extraordinary piece for Upfest this year. The long wall is at the back of the brick building on North Street Green, and I believe that this is the first year it has been ‘commandeered’ for the festival.

I think I got lucky with the gorgeous weather on the day I photographed this piece, because the colours of the grass and sky are reflected in the artwork. The whole piece is a mash-up of stunning portraits and a peacock and peacock feathers.

The Hass has made a clever play with the eye patterns on the feathers and the eyes in the portraits, quite deliberately I’m sure. Not only does the piece blend perfectly with some abstract shapes and patterns, but there is also some incredible detail throughout the work. It is unbelievable that the whole thing is painted using spray cans. Outstanding work.

2338. North Street Green (13)

I said in a post not too long ago that I would have to start doubling up on Nevergiveup’s rabbits, because there are so many of them, and so tru to my word, here are two for the price of one.

Both of these are at North Street Green, and one has been there rather longer than the other one and is looking a little worse for wear. This purple bunny is a little bit dumpy, constrained by the size and shape of the utility box it is painted on, but nonetheless cute.

The older rabbit on the door has been tagged quite heavily and could probably do with a makeover. It is quite unusual to see Nevergiveup’s rabbits defaced in this way, but I guess on an urban green like this one you are inviting trouble. Not much point in saying more to come from this artist…

1687. Upfest 2018 (27)

Many of you will now that I am a big fan of the work of Jee See (Goshiku Chavu) and have featured his work many times on this blog. It is not only his raw and passionate artwork that I like but the honesty and integrity of the artist himself, and the rich life experiences he has had. His journey into street art has been an interesting one and it is probably all the better for it.

For Upfest Jee See produced this rather haunting piece ‘escape airstrip one – 1984 is not fiction’ – a politically charged piece. I have just noticed a rather annoying balloon string hanging right across the photograph, obscuring it a little. Grrr. At the base of the hooded character Jee See offers his trademark ‘seismic’ tag, always a winner in my book. My only regret about this piece is that by the time I got to it, he had left North Street Green and I didn’t get a chance to hook up with him. Maybe another time.

1562. North Street Green (11)

This utterly magnificent piece is by Philth who is the Upfest featured artist for June and who has made this Upfest curated wall his own for the month. Some of you may remember his Upfest 2017 piece which he painted with N4T4 in the rain, both artists sporting umbrellas while at work.

Since Upfest, Philth has gone on a binge of producing the most beautiful floral prints, which transport me back to my home in the 1970s and my mother’s love for floral wallpaper. She had good taste and would surely love this wall by Philth.

This work really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, it is so different, and it is great to see floral print on this kind of scale. I can’t wait to see what he treats us to for Upfest 2018 (only a month away…can it be true?

1355. North Street Green (10)

I recently took a few work colleagues on a guided street art tour to Bedminster as part of an organisational event designed to share skills, learn more about the work we do and to get to know each other better and the city we live in as part of a wellbeing initiative. The tour was very oversubscribed, and I may have to run some more. It was something of a success and all the participants told me that they had really enjoyed it.

What luck it was then that we came across one of Bristol’s most well known street artists at work, just finishing off a new work as part of his nomination as Upfest artist of the month for March in the build up to Upfest 2018, Andy Council.

His style and presentation should come as no surprise to regular readers of this blog. He has created a wonderful dinosaur, a stegosaurus type I think, which is composed of architectural features, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge on the head of the beast. I stopped for a quick chat with Andy, but it was the coldest day of the year so far and I felt I needed to keep the tour moving. It was nice to be able to show people an artist at work, and even better that it was Andy Council.
